my grandfather used to say "Holy Mackerel!" when something really impressive or surprising happened. Still makes zero sense to me

Where Did the Term Holy Mackerel Come from?
The term holy mackerel actually comes from an insult which comes from the mid 18th century. It is in reference to Catholics who couldn't eat meat on Fridays as part of their religion. Mackerel was often a fish of choice.
