I had a friend who did a hitch in Dubai when he was in his late 20s. When he told his wife they were moving to Dubai, she cried for 3 days.

Four years later when he told her they were moving back to Mandeville, she cried for a week. They loved it. He has some great stories from over there.

When someone says expat I don't normally correlate that to they took a job as the primary provider temporarily in a foreign country. Expat to me is more like someone that chose to retire in a foreign country. I know its just semantics, but none the less I don't call military guys stationed in say Japan "expats". Now if you say married a Saudi and took a job there specifically to be with her, that would be an expat.

Point being, that's a weird way to phrase it.

Title should be like "Should I take a job in Saudi?"

Big difference from, "should I retire in Saudi?"

I hope you're right. 7 years in West Africa is penance enough. I'll take Romania.

I'm not military but you're not far off. Basically I don't want to get my arse shipped off to Arabia and never see my son again.

I've worked in several countries chasing those oil dollars but I've told my boss that the Middle East is off limits. I've been fortunate they haven't given me an ultimatum to go there. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

I worked 2 years in Saudi on a jack up, people stink, hot as hell, no alcohol and the food sucked. But if you are living in a nice compound it's pretty it's not bad. You should be able to retire in 10yrs.

I worked in oman for a little while and it wasnt bad. I dont think I would go back unless I had a job in the city full time. I had to work in the office in the desert, which wasnt bad but it just sucked not being able to get away from work. The time I spent in the city for visa renewal and in and out was fun. Im not sure about saudi but the spots I went to had night clubs in the hotels with liquor.

If you work out on a base it sucks because you have to eat the shitty food and cant go to the store or just get away. So make sure you get a job in the city.

After working 18 months in a tent in Afghanistan, Living on a compound in Saudi would be a cake walk.

The term expat being used to describe taking a job away from your home country is extremely common in the business world. Not sure there's anything weird about using it in that context.

I worked offshore there for a while, but spent alot of time on land in Khobar. You could actually walk down the streets at 9 at night and not have to worry about anything. You can lay a $100 bill on your nightstand and they would actually pick it up and clean up under it and put it back. Just about all the restaurants and fast food deliver. I felt alot safer there walking at night than I do in the US.
The hot over there is different. Yes it gets hot but not as humid. I would try it out if I were you. I think the city I was in was close to Bahrain. Good luck
