entering the rabbit hole..assistance for making an iPhone 4 work

its locked to att, no i dont have the original sim and yes i'm trying to make it work on tmobile.
so it looks like there's all kinds of 'gotchas'. anyone have an easy solution to simply make the phone 'activate' for tombile?
do i just install iTunes on my PC and redsnow?? or is it just some kind of SAM plugin for iTunes or what?
i've read and reread teh hacktivate and jailbreak sites but i'm not inclined to start installing a bunch of stuff on my PC until i'm sure i'm only installing what i need.
facts: phone starts up without sim and says 'need sim to continue'.
i put a sim in and it says 'wrong carrier'.
i just want to get past the 'welcome' screen on this stupid thing.
i don't even know what IMEI # the phone has or what version of the OS its running.

As was posted in the last thread, the IMEI # is stamped on the back of the phone.
ETA: Also, ATT should unlock it for you if it is no longer under contract.

no, i just finally had time to sit down & try to make this thing work and realized it was far more complicated than i thought.
just thought someone might say 'oh just do 1 2 3 and you're good'

My nexus 5 rocks.. My wife loves her nexus 4 and my daughter is having a birthday in a month so I thought I'd update her old mytouch with this iPhone.
And after trying to make this work my hatred of Apple has increased dramatically.

I'm having trouble getting it open. My nexus 4 Sim test tool won't fit and neither will a thumbtack.

Buy the correct phone for the correct carrier then you have zero issues with it working or not.
