Elon Musk's proposed hyperloop, a super-fast train moving at 600 miles per hour, is looking a lot more solid with release of a 76-page report on how to make that idea a reality. The tubes, rather like a scaled-up versions of the pneumatic tubes used to send messages, back in the 1950s or a safer version of the tubes people use to get around in the cartoon Futurama. The hyperloop would send people in pods using a combination of low air pressure and magnets to speed up the capsules and slow them down quickly at their destination.

"The Hyperloop would not only have the potential revolutionize transportation,, it solves a major problem: over populated cities and highways," the report states. "The ramifications of partially resolving that problem is staggering."

The paper focuses specifically on an approximately 400 mile loop between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The example cities would take about 30 minutes to travel between on the hyperloop, compared to most of a day's drive. Along with that example, the report lists a bunch of other cities , including Washington D.C., as possible homes for hyperloop stations.

tl;dr fast fricking train proposed to connect regional cities

This could be the answer to Baton Rouge's traffic problems.

After re-reading the article... apparently they're not like 'conventional' trains. They're like capsules that travel through tubes?

Damn science, you scary.

Idea is good, but I don't think an earthquake prone are seems very logical. I'd think the required tolerances for this would be extremely rigid. Not sure how regular tremors wouldn't create issues.

He's a smart guy so it must not be an issue/ concern.

Hope it happens, but I doubt it will. It seems we're against doing anything remotely smart with our infrastructure

What part of "we can't have nice things in urban areas" is he confused about?

And the micronauts invented this years ago. That's right, bitches. The micronauts.

What? You're scared of hitting an obstruction at 600 mph?

Sound like a real pussy, IMO.

That's great and all but how does he plan on powering this thing?

Seems like you would need to address the energy needs and build that infrastructure first. Good luck getting a power plant approved in CA

I can assure you these thing won't run on wind and solar power. Nukes, fossil fuel and coal fired plants will also be out of the question for the folks in CA (as well as other places).

It is solar powered.

Not feasible, at least for the next 20ish years.

I'm unaware of any solar tech that's able to propel a train at 600 mph, much less at night.

No, I think these projects cost way more than they benefit, and tend to be turned into graffiti tagged shitburgers almost overnight.
