The elevator shot upwards around 80kph (50mph) and hit the top of the building at the 31st floor. The man remains in a serious condition in hospital.

The next time you ride in an elevator, you will think of this clip. A man in Santiago, Chile was seriously injured this weekend when a malfunctioning elevator went up more than 30 stories in less than 15 seconds. It then smashed into the roof of the building. Rescue workers had to pry his body out of the runaway elevator. Thankfully, he's alive in a local hospital.

I'm surprised it didn't just go through the roof and keep on going.

Do they have the same elevator standards and inspections that they do here? I doubt it.

Dude would get pummeled to the floor, then shot up to the ceiling, then fall 7 feet to the floor again. Dang.

My phobia was always the elevator brakes failing and dropping like a rock at 50 mph.

Same here. They have shocks or springs in the pit to reduce some of the impact but still, screw that.

No shocks, but the do have springs but they are not the designed
for situations like this. They are only for making the stop at the bottom floor more comfortable.
