I purchased some headphones in used like new condition to save money, but when I received them they had a very noticeable fragrance smell all over them. I don't believe it's possible to get this smell out. Some people might actually like the smell, but I'm not a fan of scents like this.

Since these are headphones I was actually going to replace the removable ear pads with brand new aftermarket ones anyways, but that still won't get rid of the smell that is baked into the entire headset.

The listing said no refunds, but eBay usually allows returns regardless.

I feel bad to ask for a return, because maybe I should have asked if the item had any smells if smells were going to be an issue. Even if it's a "good" smell it still bothers me enough to not want them any longer. It's almost as if they sprayed it with some kind of product before sending to me, but I have no idea.

Should I just start the process to return them or should I eat it? I try to be a considerate person. I am interested to know how others would handle this.

You’re overthinking this. Just start the returns process.

I figured I was overthinking it.

Also, it wasn't an actual auction. It was a buy it now/offer listing, so maybe I shouldn't feel so bad about returning it.

I appreciate your response, so thank you.

Open up a return. Click on "item not as described". Items "like new" don't have a smell.

I always thought “no refund” meant no refund. Buy at your own risk.
eBay will accept returns on an item listed as no refund?

I believe yes, because eBay's own policy is still 30 days if the circumstances are deemed worthy. This is actually why I still consider buying used off eBay, because I feel like I am still somewhat protected just in case there is an issue like this.

I think what happens first is you open a case for a return and the seller can approve, work with you, or reject it. And if it is rejected then eBay will make a determination/ruling.

I realize the return part said no refunds, but the listing itself still said like new. So this wasn't like an "as is" type of listing. I guess you could argue no refund is the same as "as is," but I find them to be a bit different. If the actual condition listed "as is" then I would definitely be against the idea of returning.

If I purchased something as is condition then even if it didn't work I would still keep the item. I would agree with that risk.

I process upward of 1,000 sales on eBay a year.
You simply request a return. The seller can grant it within a time frame or give you a deal that you mutually agree on. If the seller does not make it right then eBay will proceed with the return after 5 days.

I sell on eBay. Try to engage the seller through messages. A lot of sellers will work something out to avoid the negative feedback hit.

If it doesn't work out you can always use the old listing to "sell one like this" or "sell similar" item and sell it yourself with honest description. Use calculated shipping based on buyer location. USPS Ground Advantage or Priority. Good luck

Thanks for that information. One time I bought an item off Mercari with an issue and the seller told me to just keep the item and they would refund me, but I still made sure to send it back to them. I thought that was nice of them to offer that though.

I especially hate to ask for a return from an individual seller rather than say some huge business. I imagine individual sellers are often trying to get money quickly out of need. At least that's the case when I sell things.

I went ahead and requested a return and it looks like the seller is going to fight me over it. They are already saying it had no smell or scent when they sent it. It's one thing if they want to say no refunds, but I'm not making up my issue. And it's definitely not from end. It was immediately noticeable upon opening. I wanted to use these headphones.

So this should be fun.

Yeah, if I have to I will just try to sell the item, but I will absolutely explain the deal about it. I don't like to hide anything, because I want to be honest and I want to avoid future returns. I'll still lose money, but I could at least get some of it back.

Return them not as described. Ebay will give you your money back and if the seller doesn't agree to the return Ebay might tell you to keep the item.

Wipe them down with 90% iso alcohol. No smell can withstand that.

You want him to take a loss on an item that clearly wasn’t as described, and didn’t meet the definitions which are clearly outlined by eBay?

That’s only something a shady seller would tell you to do.

They were likely used for listening to reggae and were imbued with the odor that reggae music is often associated with and the seller used something to mask it. I am being serious about the reason even if I am off on the particular scent.
