depends on age.. 16 and under requires a learners permit first

I believe over 17 you go to a much shorter class

Absolutely not.

Though I'm sure this could vary by state.

No one in the state of Louisiana can get a driver's license now without some type of driver's education. For minors, 15-17, they have to take a 38 hour course. 30 classroom hours and 8 behind the wheel. 18 and over can take a 14 hour course. 6 hour classroom course and 8 hours behind the wheel. There is no way around it anymore and no matter how old you are you will have to do the 8 hours of driving.

I've run into folks 20 years old who had not gotten their license. If you lived in a podunk town how would you even find an adult driver's Ed course? Also, I paid $300 for my daughter's school based course. That's prohibitive for a lot of households. Seems there is a need for affordable alternatives.

I teach drivers ed at a place where parents can afford it. Other places, kids have a difficult time getting a license because the families can't come up with the money. If you paid $300 you actually got off pretty good. As far as adult driver's education, those people would have to find a private academy somewhere. If they are in a Podunk town, the closest municipality probably has something to offer.
