Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

Guess this now annual campaign is being publicized on WAFB morning news. Watching the stories, it appears that a significant amount of money/resources are being thrown at that-local LO, LSP, other agencies, meaning more officers on highways and more checkpoints. Serious question-how many fatalities do the stats show due to drunk drivers, versus fatalities due to acute lead poisoning, stabbing, beatings, etc? How about versus incidents involving big rigs? Is this the best use of limited police resources when we have violent crime seemingly growing in popular tourist areas that New Orleans relies on to drive their economy?
This is not condoning drinking and driving, but to play this off as the best way to ensure public safety and not admit it is more about their return on investment from the revenue gained is BS. I'm on the road a lot, and it appears to me that odds of being in a potentially serious accident are much higher from distracted or just poor drivers or reckless 18 wheeler drivers are much higher than from an impaired driver.

You should maybe look up actual stats before saying things like this. Fatalities involving alcohol are a huge problem in Louisiana. Also, the violent crime rate in New Orleans has actually trended down over the last decade.

well drinking and driving is easily prevented, especially in a city like New Orleans. It's also a source of revenue those too dumb to take advantage of cabs. That slogan has been being used for as long as I can remember
Would you be happy if the state started a Eat paint, Get Rolled Over campaign?

they are enforcing the law...don't see how that is a bad thing

How does a department generating money hurt their resources exactly?

Violent crime isn't growing

So there have been more fatalities from drunk drivers YTD in New Orleans than murders? Baton Rouge? I posed it as a question-I'll look up stats when I get to my computer in a bit, I'm just going off what I see in the media and observations from the road.

Obviously not, there isn't a city in the country with drunk driving fatalities being higher than violent crime. What exactly are you trying to prove here?

What are the stats?

There are probably 10 times as many injuries from dd as there are deaths. Just exposing the deaths without the injuries included is kind of a slanted view imo.

He probably thinks my post was implying that. Guess I should have made the two sentences separate paragraphs. My actual points were:
1) Violent crime is not trending up in NOLA
2) Statistically alcohol related deaths are a disproportional problem in LA, which is why they garner attention. Like has been stated earlier, preventing an alcohol related death is easier than preventing a murder.

In 2013, 33% of traffic deaths were caused by drunk drivers. This is on the higher end in comparison to other states.
Just did a random google search

I'm not sure he even knows what he is implying

Sure you're not. How many DWIs do you have?

Not to say that NOLA violent crime is trending upwards, but isn't it one of the most violent cities in the country and consistently being considered the murder capital of America?

Much of the emphasis on drunk driving and grants / campaigns is because of MADD. Which has gone from a legit grass roots organization into a behemoth bullying lobbying organization. Ask someone involved in the court system about these people. They aren't liked but people are afraid to speak out against them.
Not that their cause wasn't pure at the beginning but they have gotten to where they are so puritanical that they are driving prosecutions that don't need to be done as alcohol related.

Maybe not the murder capital consistently but you are correct. what does this have to do with drinking and driving?

It drives me nuts that it almost rhymes. Every time I see the sign, I read it internally as:
Drive Sober, or Get Pulled Ober.
Drive Sober, or Get Pulled Ober.

I have no issue with penalties for drinking and driving if caught, but I don't support the idea of a checkpoint.

A lot of "drunk driving" stats are very misleading. They are kept that way by the likes of MADD and police departments that make a killing on DWI checkpoints. "You just blew $10,000", right?
I'm not saying I think it's bad that there are DWI checkpoints, just that it's as much about public safety as red light cameras and inspection sticker checkpoints are.
