There's a ton in central Arkansas, more than I've ever seen.

My wife (no pics) just came inside and mentioned how many dragonfly’s were out. We are in New Orleans.

I've noticed a hell of a lot more of them lately in north Mississippi.

Dragonflies are awesome. Their skill at hunting mosquitos is almost unfair

This is the second swarm. There was a bigger one a few weeks ago.

There have been considerably bigger swarms of June bugs this year, too. I've heard people mention them in AL, TN, and MS.

Certain dragonflies seem to have really good swarms ever so often. Maybe it is good weather, just the right amount of rain at the right time. Food availability likely matters, too. They feed on small insects like mosquitoes and gnats.

Purple Martins, Tree Swallows, and Barn Swallows will be along to eat their fill of the dragonflies.

They're ruthless killers of anything they can get their mouths on. They'll kill other dragonflies, even their own kind. They're big on rape, too, and gangbangs.

Just got home a little while ago and was like wtf. Saw a bunch when we got off the interstate at bonnabel and was shocked….then turned into our neighborhood and they are everywhere.

Something to do with the rain?

I’ve seen this before. It’s not uncommon thousands to hatch out around the same time.

Yep, and hatching of a food source.

I had a swarm of what looked like thousands in a field near my house a couple years ago. They were feeding on clouds of gnats/fungus flies. They usually swarm for food and maybe mating.

Then, the birds moved in. They were also mainly after the same flies, but the Martins were picking off the dragonflies, too.

You totally fricked up my opinion on them now. Rapist or mosquito?

Yeah, mating isn't optional with dragonflies. There's no such thing as consent. There's really no mating ritual, either.

Hell, it doesn't even matter if a female has already mated. Another male will come along, catch her in mid-air, use a specially adapted part of its tail to scoop out the semen/sperm deposited by the other male, and then re-mate with the female.

Before Ida I had thousands in my yard every day. No mosquito problem. Not so much any more.
