Top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci left the hosts of Fox & Friends disappointed and frustrated Friday when he threw cold water on their insistence that the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine is a game-changing cure for the coronavirus.

Citing a recent poll showing that 37 percent of doctors around the world feel the drug is currently the most effective treatment of COVID-19, co-host Steve Doocy added that frequent Fox News guest Dr. Mehmet Oz recently touted a small Chinese study that found the drug had some efficacy in treating the virus.

Doocy went on to play a clip of Dr. Oz wondering whether Fauci was impressed with the results of that study. The Fox host asked the top physician to respond to the TV doctor.

“That was not a very robust study,” replied Fauci, a member of the White House coronavirus task force. He also pointed out that while there’s still a possibility of a “beneficial effect,” the scale and strength of the evidence is not “overwhelmingly strong.”

“But getting back to what you said just a moment ago that ‘X percent’—I think you said 37 percent—of doctors feel that it’s beneficial. We don’t operate on how you feel. We operate on what evidence is, and data is,” he continued. “So although there is some suggestion with the study that was just mentioned by Dr. Oz—granted that there is a suggestion that there is a benefit there—I think we’ve got to be careful that we don’t make that majestic leap to assume that this is a knockout drug.”

Yep, starting at the top with the leader of the free world. Dr. Fauci might soon find himself out of a job as a result.

Wouldn't shock me but I don't anticipate that happening anytime soon

The optics would be terrible

Normally this would make sense if you have time. But the people in US hospitals don’t in this case. If I’m laying in a hospital bed and my lungs are on fire from coughing nonstop and the ER Dr asks me if want Hydroxychloroquine, I’ll say yes without a second thought. Because I’ll get desperate if I’m a few steps to death. And if a group of Drs say it helps, then it’s good enough for me.

There are testimonials from patients who took it, and for them, it helped. How is that dumb?

Because there are also testimonials about alien abductions and bigfoot sightings, folks claim all kind of things helped them, it is the ultimate form of confirmation bias.

Evidence-based medicine does not use testimonials. To those that got it before they got really sick, they were probably likely to recover anyway. This is a good thing—that your doctors aren’t basing their practice habits on feelings and anecdotal evidence. I am the biggest Trump supporter there is and I think he’s doing a great job, but he never should have tweeted about this until there was evidence. Now people that have been on the drug for years for their rheumatologic disorders have had difficulty getting it.

If Fauci would communicate a bit better he wouldn't get people so wound up.

Nowhere does he say it doesn't work. He says it may work in fact. But he comes across as poo pooing it and "we need to study everything for 18 months before going back to work."

The second thing I really do think he would enact 100% if it was up to him.

He won't say hydroxychloroquine works because it goes against his nature to study everything to the last detail and it would be irresponsible to call it a miracle cure as it may not do a helluva lot.

Just like Trump doesn't say it is a cure, but rather it looks promising and may help. It's his job to be a cheerleader while keeping expectations moderated.

Fauci on Jan 26th:

quote:

"The American people should not be worried or frightened by this. It's a very, very low risk to the United States," Dr. Fauci said on The CATS Roundtable. "It isn't something that the American public needs to worry about or be frightened about."

He may not be the genius some want him to be.

what a time we live in.

so one doctor says we have to be cautious in this treatment and then Yahoo writes an article with quotes everywhere saying 'shut down' and 'fox and friends'

and then an idiot on TD starts a thread with the subject line 'pours cold water'

and really at the end of the day all i got out of it was the most recognizable doctor in the free world says we have to be cautious about a very small portion size.

riveting stuff. just riveting.

Fauci is not going to say it works because there is no evidence that it does work. I also didn’t vote for Trump to be a cheerleader—I expect him to listen to his experts he has gathered and make the best decision based on the data. That’s how medicine works. The same ventilator settings they are putting people on for this virus is based upon evidence they’ve gathered for years studying and gathering data of ARDS.

So the data on the mortality rate doesn't reflect a reason for a national lockdown. But models do. So hes really not in favor of hard data in every case? Right?

But he insists on hard data before a Dr should attempt a demonstrated positive treatment. He refuses to accept the computer modeled benefits of this?

haha, right

You should’ve seen the post the guy made about jizzing in his own mouth.

This is the pandemic Fauci has always dreamed of. He is thriving on the chaos. He needs to be replaced by someone more objective.
