Does your state require car inspections?

If so how often and what is inspected?
Here, we used to have to get cars inspected every year and they checked everything from wipers, lights, brakes, horn, to emissions....
Awhile back they changed it to ONLY emissions testing. And if you buy a new car, it doesn't need to get re-inspected for 5 years.
Husband just called me a few minutes ago to tell me he was leaving work to head to the inspection station (state agency) because he had just realized his 5 year sticker expires TODAY. And MINE DOES TOO because we bought our cars the same month/year 5 years ago. No way I can make it to Motor Vehicle Agency by 4:30 (closing time) so I'll have to drive it there illegally tomorrow. I hope I don't get pulled over because the fine for having an expired sticker is about $150.
I see that dang 3/2016 sticker on my windshield every dang day for 5 years and never gave it a thought LOL.

No. but brake tags are mandatory.

Depends what county you're in. Where I am now, they do emissions tests depending on the year of your vehicle. Anything newer than 2008 does not need them.
Where I grew up, there was no testing whatsoever.

No. We have to get emissions checked periodically. Depends on the age of your car if it's annually or bi-annually. They send a notice with your plate renewal. The emissions check is auto transmitted to the DMV. Don't give California any more ideas about ways to collect money. I'm just waiting for the inspection sticker "to make cars safer" and the road usage tax in addition to the gas tax "to make the roads safer"

Every year in Texas.
You have to happen across the biggest prick cop ever to get a ticket the day after it expires.

Yes. Big pain in the arse here in Louisiana with my old Saturday truck. Have to drive it all week waiting for the check engine to go off long enough to swing in.

Tennessee does require an inspection. So I plan on keeping my car registered in Alabama for as long as possible.

Yeah, required before you can renew your tag (so annually).
Pain in the rear.

The police in the town where I live are really great guys. The motor vehicle agency is in the next township over--about a 10 minute drive--and those guys have a well-deserved reputation for being pricks.

Maryland here.
Unfortunately we have an extensive inspection And emissions test. Not sure on the time frame, but I think it is every 2 years.
Altogether the inspections cost approx $100.

On my truck in high school I took the catalytic converters off and dumped the whole exhaust because I was an idiot and liked people knowing I was driving to their house from five miles away, so I always would wait like 6-months to re-do my inspection and I'd take it to the ghetto'est place around so they'd pass me. We didn't get emission tested, but it's still illegal to not have a cat on your vehicle.
If you live somewhere that does emission tests than you're probably into people of the same sex.

The state of Tennessee doesn't require it, but certain counties do. Mostly Nashville and the suburbs.

No. But sometimes I wish we would. The bald tires and bad brakes on the road are scary. Also, too many cars that apparently have broken turn signal lights.
