Correct. Even death does not forgive student loans.

Nope. My wife still has debt from the early/mid-90s. Every year they take all of our $ from our tax refund and use it towards that debt. For the past couple of years I've filed a "injured spouse" claim but even so, I've only got back half of what I should've gotten.

What did she get a degree in that has taken 25 years and counting? Apparently if you are getting a refund on your tax return it wasn't worth it.

Student Loan Debt does go away after 20 years...

...if you're on a 20-year payment plan and have taken care of the throat-fricking that is variable interest rates

That's because had anyone paid the interest on 150k for 20 years, they would have paid well over the full balance. So at year 20 when you paid your minimum payment, you have forked over 125k towards your debt and 100k in interest but you feel good because they forgave the last 25k.

Yes, I know my math is BS, but this is the OT; just roll with it.

Sounds like somebody is wanting something for nothing and shite just handed to him for free because he feels entitled to it.

If he's on an income based repayment plan then you can be forgiven after 20 or 25 years depending on the plan

This, but don't forget - the amount forgiven WILL be taxed as income. So he might be looking at a $50K+ tax bill in 20 years so save for that.

If he made 25k that year +50k would essentially result in around 13k in federal taxes owed and he would realize that he is middle class for that year hahaha.

I'm on an income-based repayment for my FEDERAL loans. I pay based on how much I owe relative to my income. After 20 years (or it might be 30 years) of being on this plan, whatever loans are left will be discharged.

However, for my private loans, I have to pay back in full with no special payment plan.

Incorrect for Federal Loans

quote:

Death Discharge

If you, the borrower, die, then your federal student loans will be discharged. If you are a parent PLUS loan borrower, then the loan may be discharged if you die, or if the student on whose behalf you obtained the loan dies.
The loan will be discharged if a family member or other representative provides a certified copy of the death certificate to the school (for a Federal Perkins Loan) or to the loan servicer (for a Direct Loan or FFEL Program loan).

There are also other ways it is forgiven or discharged.
