Tired of waiting on contractor. Anyone know if building codes require R13 insulation or can I use R11 in walls?

That really depends on where you are. Dofferent municipalities have different building codes.

No less then 13. When is comes to insulation, one never has enough. It's one of those things you don't see till your power bill comes in.

There's a ton of R13 at lowes and HD right now, just do it yourself, get a stapler and wear gloves.

I helped gut a house in NBR for a friend's coworker. Not one piece of insulation anywhere in the house except for a small one car carport that had been closed in to make a room. Those 2 walls enclosing carport had insulation.

We couldn't believe it.

Thanks. Stines is handing it out out like candy telling people it meets code. I always take what they say over there with a grain of salt so thought I would check with the experts.

HD sell R13 in 32' long rolls that cover 40sqf per roll. If you buy 20 rolls, each roll drops down to $10.49 a piece.

Most house built prior to 1970 or so had no insulation in the walls, insulation in the attic was minimal. Energy cost were so cheap there was no need to require it. I have owned several older houses with no insulation in the walls.

R19 with the reflective surface is cheaper in the long run. That stuff will literally save you hundreds in a years time.

R-19 in a 3.5" wall is compressed and actually ends up around R-11. Best for a 3.5" wall is high density R-13.

R-19 is 6" thick and used in 6" walls.

Yep, the insulating properties are from the trapped air in the material, not the material itself, compressing it reduces the effectiveness.
