I used to see old Cajun men call each other "neg" all the time. It fell out of favor for obvious reasons.
I not sure I would cotton to be being called neg.

In reality I use some form of the above for almost every lady I speak with when I don’t otherwise address with ma’am. Nothing derogatory about any of it. If someone ask me not to, then I’ll stop, but way too many people get their panties in a bunch about this kind of stuff - like the OP.
I never use Bro, guy, dude, homie, or anything like that for men with whom I converse. The exception being my elders then I use Sir.
