I'm a recreational player and going to my first World Series of Poker at the end of the month. Was wondering if anyone has experienced it so they can tell me what to expect, what to avoid, what to prepare for....

The decision making to gamble on baseball was also shitty. That plays into poker as well.

Are you playing in the 10,000 dollar buy in tournament?

I play recreationally with friends. Usually 10-15 people once a month for $40 buy in. I came in 3rd and 2nd last 2 times

No, that's the main event. I'm playing the Colossus this year which will be the biggest live poker tournament ever. They're expecting around 20k entries. Buy in is $565.

I will say this, as a very mediocre player, the satellite tournaments =/= the Vegas tournament.

I got into a big game with players from the satellite in NOLA a couple of years back and cleaned house. I couldn't believe what a poor bunch of players they were as a group. They played ultra-aggressive like the guys on TV but with crappy cards. No one knew when to fold. It was glorious for me though.

My point being, don't convince yourself to blow $10k going to Vegas based off of what you do in a satellite.

yeah, I agree. People tend to panic when they are low in chips and get out of character by making bad plays.

Stay away from deep stack tourneys, they favor pros way more than tourneys with regular stacks.

I play one to two events out there every summer. I recommend going out to the Rio a day early to get used to the layout and sign up. You'll have to sign up for a player card which takes some time and there are multiple rooms in the Wsop area so it's more comfortable to know which room and table you're going to be at instead of rushing around. Also, there's a wsop entrance in the back of the Rio that is one hundred times quicker to use than just parking in the regular casino parking.

Have fun and soak it all in, it really is a good time and likely there will be other tournaments going on that will be at their final table so it's always fun to watch live when a tourney is at that late of a stage.

Good Luck!

Actually i like deep stack better. It allows you to use more strategy post flop. Short stack tournies are just shove fests taking away any play post flop.

a shite load of derelicts

if your single and have a stash, u will get laid, no doubt about it. You might even get to bang one of the big female poker players. They have been known to offer sexual favors for tourney buy ins.

Be prepared to grind. If you make a run you are going to be playing more poker than you've ever played in a sitting, not getting drunk, not getting bored and not tilting are the biggest factors in large tournament success imo.

also, you sound like a dork talking about your big blind per hour rate, not telling anyone that may be the biggest key for you.

Which is one of the reasons why you will have no chance against the pros at the WSOP. People love playing deep stack tourneys because they last longer but the fact remains you should only play poker for money and at the WSOP a deep stack tourney is by far the worst kind of event for an amatuer to enter. Its your money though......
