Interested to hear any stories or opinions on it as I was recommended to go in for a consultation. From what I understand, they put you under general anesthesia and trigger small electric currents to the brain causing a minor seizure. I would have to do that 3 times a week for a few weeks

Seems a little scary but then again it's 2017 so that shite is prob nothing to these doctors. Results seem to be pretty positive

shite my bad I left that part out. For me personally, I've been struggling for years with depression. After googling it though it seems like this is a treatment done for many mental illnesses

I'm just messing with you (previous post). This treatment is more common that you'd think. You wont get much guidance here but I'm sure you're researching credible sources. Good luck with it either way.

I would suggest trying the (TMS) transcranial magnetic stimulation procedure that stimulates nerve cells in your brain to help alleviate symptoms of depression. It's relatively new. A magnetic coil is placed around your head for about 20 minutes. 3 or 4 weekly sessions are needed. I haven't seen or read the reviews or literature in the success rate but having ECT should be regarded as a last desperate act.

I have no medical training in psychiatry but I have dealt with depression for most of my life. I would try cognitive behavioral therapy and medication first.

Used to be married to a shrink. She occasionally administered ECT (to patients, not to me). She said it usually worked wonders, said the actual process wasn't like you see it portrayed in old movies.

It's mainly for very severe depression that won't respond to any meds. Will improve mood but also has memory loss as a key side effect.

eta: Has psychotherapy also failed? If not, try that first.
