I've always tipped on meal + tax. Also, wife says that now mandatory to tip at least 25%. 20% is for bad service.

I hope your wife is a former server, otherwise she's a dumbass.

18 to 20% is standard; less for poor service, more for exceptional service

I usually just always tip 20%, easier to figure out.

Your wife is ridiculous.

I normally double the 9% tax and tip 18%. If the food/service is exceptional, I'll go 25% excluding tax.

If I get bad service, I have simply not tipped before, but generally do 15% because I know they aren't getting paid shite for wages.

I hate the whole concept of tipping. Raise the prices and just pay your servers what they are worth. Too many shitty servers out there.

Thta's some white people shite. For us black folk, if we get good service, that means no tip. For bad service, we bitch to the manager until our meal is comped.

I think the new standard is supposed to be 18 to 22% for good to great service

I honestly never tip on %. It depends a lot on the amount of the meal. I had lunch today and my bill was 8 dollars. I'm not going to leave a tip of less than 2 dollars. That's for cheap folk.

Horrible policy.

And it doesn't matter MUCH which you do...

For instance:
If your meal is $10, and tax is 10%, that's $11.00.

20% of meal = $2.00; total = 13.00
20% of meal and tax = $2.20; total = 13.20

Difference of $0.20

Now, of course, this scales up...but you'll still be doing a fraction of a fraction difference in tipping...so in the scheme of things...still not much.

Let's say it's a party.

You take the whole table's bill at $1000

Tax at 10% = $1100

20% Tip before tax = $200
20% Tip after tax = $220

Only a difference of $20.00

Chump change compared to the $1000 (one fiftieth of the total cost of the bill)
