Do you think there are people in the witness protection program near where you live?

There is probably no way to know. Interesting to consider the secrets that strangers might be holding.

Probably not. Strangers would stick out like a sore thumb here.

If your local grocery suddenly starts carrying arugula (it's a veg-et-a-ble), you know someone is in town.

As of 2013, 8,500 witnesses and 9,900 family members have been protected by the U.S. Marshals Service since 1971.[9]
According to Gerald Shur, the person who created the federal program, about 95% of witnesses in the program are "what we call criminals". They may be intentional criminals, or people who are doing business with criminals, such as the engineer who bought off a mayor "because that's how you do business in the city. In his mind, he wasn't doing anything criminal", as Shur said. A witness who agrees to testify for the prosecution is generally eligible to join the program, which is entirely voluntary. Witnesses are permitted to leave the program and return to their original identities at any time, although this is always discouraged by administrators.[10]
In both criminal and civil matters involving protected witnesses, the U.S. Marshals cooperate fully with local law enforcement and court authorities to bring witnesses to justice or to have them fulfill their legal responsibilities.[11]

Until he got jailed again for peddling ecstacy a few years back, Sammy "the Bull" Gravano was in the WPP in Scottsdale but it was the worst-kept secret in town. He tried to change his appearance with plastic surgery and then just said "frick it", and he and his wife owned and ran an Italian restaurant and he was very visible in town.
Another Chicago mafioso, Frank Calabrese, Jr., worked at my gym in Scottsdale and I spoke with him a few times about life in the Chicago mob. I believe he has a book coming out and the screenplay his up for bidding. He refused to go in the WPP, against his family's wishes. His father was one of the guys who (allegedly) killed Tony Spilotro, who was the mobster played by Joe Pesci in "Casino".
