Do you make your college aged kids get a job if they come home for summer?

Apparently fewer and fewer are. Teen labor participation at all time low.

College aged? I started bagging groceries at 15 after school, weekends, holidays, and summers. And I mowed yards in the neighborhood before that. I don't have a gap on my resume since I was 15.

My dad made me do hard labor every summer in different industries to make me understand how hard it is and to make me work harder for a good job indoors.

That shite WORKED.

Landscaping, road construction, and home construction were the 3 and all in Baton Rouge summer heat.

Honestly, landscaping was easily the worst. It was industrial landscaping mostly so digging holes for trees, bush hogging fields, etc.

If he doesn't, I'm probably going to question the source of his spending money, because I know it isn't going to be my bank account.

You put mowing yards on your resume? Congrats on the $12/hour baw.

My parents didn't make me do anything, but they didn't give me any money if I wasn't taking a full class schedule. That equation solved itself pretty quickly.

Might want to take some time off and try a grammar class.

Summers are for travel and relaxation. Kids have the rest of their lives to work.

I don't ride my college-aged kid too hard on work, but he works hard anyhow. He wants his own money to control and use as he sees fit.

If you don't pay for every little thing they want, things take their natural course. They will find a way to make money.

It's been my experience that things work a lot better with them when you're not always in crisis-mode concerning money. He's a hell of a lot cheaper now than he was as a high schooler. So that's cool with me.

If they want spending money to go drinking it's not coming from me. Good luck finding an alternate cash flow.

I'm not a parent yet, but I would strongly encourage them getting internships in different fields of work - paid or unpaid. Summer internships are the biggest investment in their futures.

Some degrees require this. However, I wouldn't let my kid work for free.

I did this as well, and I took a summer to go to Europe.

And I usually did at least one summer school class. So I would work these jobs for a couple months only. It was usually just a favor one of my dad's friends would do for him (employ me temporarily to make my hands bleed).

I always washed cars and cut grass in the neighborhood. Made a lot of money doing that as well.

You wouldn't let your kid do a non paid internship? You serious?

I think the amount of money that they make is a convenient by-product of having a job. Learning to work with others, budgeting of time, seeing how a business works (or doesn't) are all important to learn at that age. Children to START learning to be an adult well before they approach adult age.

I would expect a college age kid to be working during the summer, but I'm not into snowflakes.
