Newish cars, pretty low miles.

They all bleed the same damn line that its their best price blah blah blah

I mean honestly, price is pretty good, guess its a mental thing you will always want lower than whatever price they decided to advertise at.

What leverage can one have when it really is a good deal though.....

They are just like any other business in the world. They are not there to provide you with vehicles at cost. They are in business to make a profit. I know many of them through my business, and most make less than 10% profit off most cars.

No. Why would they? I'm selling a car right now and have it listed for $17k. Truth be told I'd probably take $15,500 today just to be done with it. Same mentality a dealership has except with a lot more research built into the acceptable price.

Because of they high ball on the Internet, they will never get calls.

They have to price very competitively online since the market is much larger.

There is still a little room, but we're talking tens to a few hundreds of dollars max on most cars you see online.

So I have little chance to get a dealer to come off 3k on a car that has been sitting on their lot for 2 months?

I mean that looks bad when you see 10% but you are also talking 10% on thousands of dollars. If you can run high volume then that 10% isn't nearly as bad as they make it out to be.

I traded in a truck a few months ago, got about 2 thousand over trade value and about 1500 under retail...I looked up the truck on their used car site a few weeks later and they were asking $7000 more than they paid me in trade for it...so my answer is no it's not their honest, best price

places like Texas Direct Auto will not come off advertised price but I would think a traditional dealership might

In my experience that is doable. Sometimes real reductions are out there, but I had a used car search about a year ago with no real time limitations, so I had no incentive whatsoever to take a given deal. Lasted a few months, probably in contact with 10-12 dealers. Had several dealers walk away (and not follow up) when I tried to get any significant reductions.

I'm sure it depends on the dealership and the particular car, but from my experience I think the margins are often legitimately pretty thin.

Financing vs. cash will also play a role.

I just want to tell my story.

I recently sold a vehicle. I took it to CarMax in BR to make it easy on myself. They offered me $1900.00. I know they're in bizness to make money, but I felt that was way too low of an offer. I put it in the paper and sold it a week later for $3400.00.

Showing up in a bad mood is a TJM too. Pretend like you're pissed about being there.

That sounds like a new car dealership, and not an idependent used car lot. Most guys who own those used car lots are no where near OT baller status.

It depends on the dealer and the car. But chances are that car has dropped in price slightly every month.

After 90 days, some dealers sell for a small paper loss (pack, hold back, etc.) to just get new inventory.

You aren't getting 3k off a used car Internet price at most reputable dealers.

Look online. If it seems like a good deal compared to other cars in the area. It probably is about as low as they go.

If it's been on the lot for a while, they may take 100 or so off just to get it the hell out of there.
