I've bought 2 and they've been really shitty. Any of you handy contractor folk use one that actually does the job and that you would recommend?

I always test them on myself and they work on me.

I always do that too to either impress the ladies or to the nonhandy folk who don’t know how to swing a hammer.

Mine was close enough. Hung up a large tv and the dry wall didn't crack and it's still up after a few years. But it was frustrating marking them when going left to right, and then trying again right to left and they have seemingly moved. So I try again, nothing. So partially used the finder and knocking on the wall to confirm.

Just do what I do and drill a bunch of holes in the wall until you find one.

just refinished a powder room and i can assure you that studfinders on the market today are not reliable.

the old knuckle tapping, pilot hole, and measuring tape are a tried and true method

Stud Buddy. $9.99 at Home Depot. It's got a name that's just begging to be made fun of, but it has a strong magnet in and doesn't mark a painted wall.

Can't help you with the electronic ones. I wanted to buy one, but all of them under $50 seem to have mixed reviews.

I just use a hammer and tap the wall. It takes a while to aquire that skill though.

Look up stud buddy. I've used it quite a few times and never missed a stud.

There isn't a single one that'll work reliably

As I understand it there must be some type of nail present. Most of the studs I'll need won't have nails in them in any place other than top and bottom

I have a Stanley one and it’s hit or miss. You have to make sure you do the first click on blank wall, then move it over
