Why would you? Not sarcastically asking, I just don't see why anyone would.

ETA: Elderly people that are set in their ways and still write checks at the grocery not withstanding of course.

I don't remember the last time I wrote a check, so I don't keep a checkbook anymore.

I enter each deposit or billpay (online or auto-draft) into a spreadsheet. As each item clears, I check it off and the spreadsheet balances the account for me.

I heard my mom mother complain last week that she had to balance her checkbook. She has online banking. I asked her why she didn't just check her account to see if any checks haven't cleared. She said, "I just do it anyway".

I don't see why people with online banking would still do it.

I only write about three checks a month. The rest goes on my credit card. The business is on quickbooks. Easy Peasy.

It has its uses, especially in a business situation.

1. Rent
2. Very Large Purchases

My landlord doesn't have any way to accept electronic payment set up, so I have to write a check each month. I'd MUCH rather just have automatic bill pay, but his house, his rules.

Think down payments on vehicles and houses. These can easily run over $10k, which is well above the daily limit of most debit cards and the credit limits that a lot of people carry around with them. Of course, these are rare and a cashier's check would be perfectly serviceable, but if you're able to just write a personal check, well, that works, too.

So, not many reasons to use them, but things like this are why people still have them.

Of course, I don't balance because I write precisely one check a month and can find if it cleared or not and I'm sure as hell not going to forget stroking a five figure check.

My dad still does this. They are 68 and JUST got a debit card. I did until halfway through my freshmen year of college. Then i was just fricked up and broke all the time.
