Do any of you feel bad for obese people?

I always see threads making fun of fatties.
I have friends and family members that are obese or close to it. After HS I gained significant weight and became fat before educating myself on proper nutrition and exercise, and got into the best shape of my life. Health and fitness became a passion of mine and so I've always stayed in shape since. But, that gives me a different perspective for some of these people.
I feel bad because from the start, millions are set up for obesity. You are what you know, and a large (no pun intended) portion of parents know little about proper nutrition themselves. Unhealthy foods taste better, and are cheaper. For the uneducated, it makes it an easily justifiable option to stock their food at home that way. There is, or at least when I was in school ( I'm 26), very little education about proper nutrition. All I remember was the nutrition pyramid which is total shite. I also know a lot of schools have gone to a la cart lunches where you have cheap, fatty, and sugary options to choose from. And while they also offer healthier choices, it's hard for kids to make the smart choice in that situation.
I know the counter-arguments everyone will say. "Eat less, do more". And that we don't sympathize because it is their choice. That is all true. People are accountable for their own actions. Some people take it way too far, also, to the point that you cannot defend that behavior in any way. But it is just sad to me that we have this current epidemic, and in a lot of ways our society sets them up to fail.

I do somewhat, but prepare for lots of hatred in this thread.

You know why I don't feed stray animals?
Because they breed.
frick fat people and frick poor people. If you support them then it just makes them think it's okay.

Fat people are a major reason the health care system is fricked up.

I feel bad for children with stupid parents. I don't feel bad for adults that should know better.

I feel bad for people born into it.
My neighbors are obese and so are their kids. The Dad brings home fast food every single day. The son is like 13 and probably pushing 250-300 lbs. I feel bad for the son because he only knows how his parents live and only eats what they provide.
They are setting him up for a hard life.

Of course. You don't know what they're going through. Maybe they lost a child, spouse, parent, or career and didn't know how to cope. Then, before you know it, it gets out of control and you think there's nothing you can do, which causes you to eat more. It can spiral out of control so quickly. They know they're overweight, and they know they are putting themselves in an early grave.
If you don't have any compassion for people then you're the one who needs help.

True. There aren't many Mickey D's in the middle of goatfrickistan.

This is kind of a lame excuse. Cooking for yourself is almost always cheaper and healthier than eating out.
Fast food isn't cheap unless your eating solely off the dollar menu.

No. A lot of them just got named to Gambit's 40 under 40.

Meh. Dude, I cook at home. I can count on one hand how many times I ate out this year. The difference is negligible, at best.
Taking the time to go to the store, cooking the food, cleaning up afterwards. That time adds up and has its own expense.

It's sort of a OT thing, I almost never make fun of fat people in real life or hear other people doing it. Not because I'm morally opposed to it or something, it's just not very interesting unless the person is abnormally large, and most obese people aren't shockingly big.
As for feeling bad for them, not really. I mean, I feel bad for anyone who wants to make a major life change and struggles with it. But I don't walk around feeling bad for fat people at large, because most of them live pretty normal lives and don't seem that depressed about it.

It's an addiction struggle for many not unlike people who struggle with alcoholism or drugs. Feel bad? I don't know. But I do empathize with them. Also, there are people in my life who struggle with their weight, and I do worry about them.

any if you know what is in-season, veggies and fruit are too. It just because about time management and effort, it is easier to pick up fast food than to prep meals for a week.*
I am not saying cooking as a hobby won't get expensive with all the shite you want to buy.
*i am not even talking about doing full meal preps on sundays. Just shopping ahead so you know what you will cook during the week, and having enough for left overs

Right. There's a reason just about every fast food place has a dollar menu.

I do for children who are then screwed right from the start. That's a parental, not a personal issue.

There are plenty of people who are fat because they are lazy. That's a pretty simplistic way to look at it.
What about the kids who were obese from the start, because their parents didn't eat right. They grew up not knowing about nutrition. As adults now, they know they're overweight and need to make a change. But they don't really know where to start or what to do. It's embarrassing to them to go to the gym, completely foreign to them and uncomfortable. Plus, working full time, maybe with kids, makes it incredibly hard to get into this healthier lifestyle. For those extremely overwight, that can lead to a "what's the point?" attitude especially when it would take months of dedication to make a big difference.
I think there are plenty that fit the above description. And, I'm not saying that excuses them, but I can see how it would be an extremely hard change to make.
Too often we criticize others for problems we don't have and cannot relate to.
You're fat? Eat less, work out.
Addicted to drugs? Stop using them.
Spouse is abusive/unfaithful? Leave them.
There's an easy answer to every problem if you aren't experiencing it. Like all other personal issues, obesity comes with a lot of psychological and societal factors that make it a harder problem to overcome than many will give it credit for.
