When we count to three, we cause our children to get into the habit of delayed obedience Delayed obedience is disobedience. Counting to three encourages them to put off obeying until absolutely necessary.

No it doesn't

My parents rarely had to use this method, but as soon as my dad said "One" I immediately stopped whatever I was doing as I knew he was serious.

If he got to "two" it was because I wasn't moving fast enough. And there never was a "three"

The good thing about young kids is you can make these discipline mistakes for a while and the moment you decide to correct your parenting, it doesn't take them long to adapt. You just have to do it before they get too old.

Asking the child if he would like to do something places him on a peer level with the parent. The parent who tries to reason with her child usually ends up frustrated, and the child usually ends up disrespecting her authority by arguing rather than obeying.
So I shouldn't ask my son if he wants to go play golf with me?

Then let there be one?

A lot of parents are lazy and don't want to miss whatever event the punishment would keep the kid from.

Adult - "If you don't clean your room, we aren't going to see that movie"
Kid- NO!
Adult- ok, no movie
Kid- screams for 15 min
(15 min later)
Adult- ok, but you better clean your room when we get back.

Kid learns nothing but screaming beats threats.

My mom would tell me if the toys weren't picked up, they'd be thrown away.

One day I tested that threat and on that day I lost 2 remote control cars to the garbage man.

Yep. That's it. You don't struggle with context at all.

think I was around 13 (early 1970s) when my mom found a playboy underneath my mattress. She beat me with a switch so bad that my stepfather had to come into the room and get her off of me. He kept telling my mom "you gonna kill the boy" when he pulled her off of me. My parents were real religious.

And then dad beat you for stealing his Playboy?

The can of worms is back open. I personally love these threads because you have all the parents on here, especially the new parents, come in here and tell you this is the only subject you arent allowed to have an opinion on because you dont have kids.

Meanwhile, they are on every other board and thread in here giving their opinions on every subject under the sun.

Imo, half of them probably hit most of those points in your post and they are ashamed that they could be labeled a 'shitty' parent

So this list just criticizes things everyone has done at some point but offers nothing to do instead of these things.

We've been struggling with our 3.5 yo lately, he is stubborn as shite and drives us crazy on a nightly basis.

Tbh I don't remember where I got it from, but I do remember the arse whooping. He never raised a hand towards me, mom was the judge, jury and executioner.
