Did someone ever tell you a strange story that you kind of believe but not sure?

When I was in college I worked one summer with a guy who was a fencing contractor. I had gone to HS with his son and knew the family fairly well. He was a Korean War vet. One day we're on a break, just him and me sitting there, and he starts matter of factly telling me this story about going behind the lines to try to rescue some prisoners. Very detailed, he didn't try to make himself out as some hero, he was just one of the guys on the mission. They never found the prisoners, but if even half of it was true, it would make the plot for a hell of an action movie.

He said I was the only person he'd ever told this. He'd never even told his family. I don't know why he picked me. The guy was a school board member and well respected in the community. I don't know why he would make something like that up.

He passed away several years ago. From time to time I've tried to look up information about what he told me, but nothing rings a bell. It was a long time ago, and by now, I've forgotten most of the details. I still don't know whether it's true or not.
