I avoid BTR like the plague. It just sucks at all times of the day now.
Shreveport has many many problems, but hot damn, BTR needs to copy their road infrastructure. LOOPS & parkways on either side of the river.

A lot of locals avoid surface streets to take the interstate to get around town. That doesn't help traffic issues.

It's horrific. There has been far more traffic than lane capacity for at least 20 years now.
And there aren't enough alternative routes so a minor tie up can shut the whole region down pretty easily. And the bridges over the Mississippi river are so dysfunctional and insufficient that the inevitable suburban sprawl spreads farther and farther down I-12 and I-10 rather than moving west.
There are some pretty major things we need very soon:
- Widen I-10 between LA415 and College Drive
- Widen LA30 between Airline Highway (in Gonzales) to LSU
- Build a new bridge over the Mississippi somewhere around Plaquemine that connects I-10 and LA1 to LA30
- Build a new bridge over the Amite River at Hooper Road and S. Harrel's Ferry Rd.
- Widen Airline Highway
- Fix College Drive
- Widen US 190 through Livingston
- Widen most parish roads in Livingston, Ascension, Central, Zachary, and WBR
- Build some kind of street car system connecting LSU and downtown, and eventually downtown to mid city and beyond.

This. Baton Rouge suffers from a massive lack of redundancy in its road grid. Due to the number of water ways and bridges required to cross them, there are so few consistent north/south or east/west roads. The south half of the city is filled with choke points.
To leave the city going south, there are 3 choke points: 30 at Gardere, I-10 at highland/perkins, and Airline at 42.
To leave the city going east, there’s only 3 options: Magnolia Beach Road, Florida, and I-12.
To leave the city going west, there’s only 2 options: old bridge or new bridge.
It’s easy to go north, but there’s not nearly as much development north of the city.

I don’t even think going north is necessarily “easy.” Scenic Hwy and Plank will both take you out of the city to the north, but to get to either you have to take I-10 to I-110.. which effectively means fighting bridge traffic. Either that or you get to take Airline to the foot of the old bridge.
There are at least multiple routes to Central (Central Thwy, Sherwood, Joor, Hooper) but I don’t know many people in Central who would describe commuting to/from BR as “easy.” Depends where you work, of course.

You can thank your baw Landry for any fix anytime soon. As soon as Shawn Wilson threw his hat in the Gov Arena all new bridge talk was killed.

True. But I do think US61 combined with Plank, Scenic, Hooper, 964, etc. do have "good bones" when it comes to routing. They can be upgraded fairly easily. We are far more limited to address the routes west, east, and south without spending a fortune. I-110 is a lot easier to handle than I-10 or I-12, although it's clearly approaching a point where the elevated sections will also need an upgrade.
61 is the biggest and probably needs to be turned into a freeway to the Mississippi state line. It has some pretty big issues itself with alignment, multiple rail crossings, and weird traffic lights where overpasses should have been built. But otherwise I'd have to agree that more development north makes more sense from an infrastructure and typography standpoint. The chokepoints in that direction are easier to address. Also a little less vulnerability to hurricanes.
West Feliciana and Pointe Coupee vary between being militant to resistant to development. But they are making more and more sense now to commuters to the big employers in Baton Rouge's downtown, industrial section, or the LSU area than the distant, outlying areas on the far ends of Ascension or Livingston.

Idk man. Commuting from (for example) Zachary may be fine if you work downtown or in north Baton Rouge. But there are just so many people commuting to the I-10 & I-12 corridors and so few ways to get there.
110 is mostly fine while you’re actually driving on it. But how do you get there if you work off of Siegen, Essen, or Bluebonnet? You either fight traffic going damn near all the way to the old bridge on Airline, or you fight traffic going all the way to the new bridge on I-10. Those are basically the only ways to get there other than weaving through neighborhoods in NBR. On top of that, all of that elevated freeway is eventually going to cost a shitload to update.
I’m not saying it’s worse than going east or west, just that it’s still bad.
The problem in BR is that no amount of road upgrades can undo 100 years of shitty urban planning.

RVs going 50 mph on Interstate Highways because their owners are
a) too cheap to drive faster
