A former Baker day care worker pleaded no contest Friday to a negligent homicide charge in the October 2010 death of a 2-month-old Zachary infant who was in her care.
Ashley Rene Reifer, 27, was scheduled to stand trial Aug. 24 on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Brody Hopper.
State District Judge Chip Moore, under the terms of a plea deal, gave Reifer a suspended five-year prison term and put her on active supervised probation for five years. She cannot work at a day care center while on probation.
Dr. Bruce Wainer, the pathologist who performed Brody’s autopsy, testified in 2011 that the autopsy revealed multiple brain hemorrhages, even though there was no sign of trauma to his skull or the rest of the exterior of his body. The doctor said it was “more likely than not” that Brody’s injuries resulted from being shaken.

I'd be PISSED if I were the child's parent.

She killed someone's baby by shaking them and got 5 years probation. So now we are doing after birth abortions and thats ok. Good God!

That is BS. I think this was a pattern of behavior and this one just went too far.
If I'm not mistaken, a buddies infant son went there. During her time there he experienced a broken arm. That's probably not a coincidence.

There's a good chance the parents approved it. Prosecutors normally consult with victims before making deals like this.

This is such a tough case. If this was indeed an accident and there was true remorse I'm not sure prison is the way to go. People automatically think that putting someone in prison is the best way to handle everything. The worker didn't intentionally kill the child. It was an accident. Yes, she is negligent, but putting her in prison isn't going to bring the child back. A sad and terrible situation and I wouldn't want to be the judge in this case. We all make mistakes. This was obviously a huge mistake that this worker will have nightmares about her whole life. That's a mental prison I don't want to be in.

What is so terrifying is the number of deaths to infants from being shaken.
Probably usually some tired parent who just wants the kid to sleep or stop crying. So they skake them yelling "shut the frick up"
Next you know they are dead.
fricking animals.
And the cause of death is almost immediately known because the eyes hemorrhage.

Sounds like you know the daycare worker.

So this fat pig who took a child who was placed in her care and shook him to death can go back to working at a daycare after the probation?
frick everything.

And when she gets off probation?
With a negligent homicide conviction on her resume I doubt she'll have many offers

The worker didn't intentionally kill the child

Brody was strapped into his car-carrying seat and bleeding from the nose when his father picked him up Oct. 28, 2010, from the now-closed Busy Bee Learning Center on Groom Road in Baker, according to court documents.
If it was an accident, emergency medical personnel would've been called. The child wouldn't have been left in its carseat to be picked up by it's parent(s).

Trusting a two month old to a day care is just straight up retarded and the parents probably realize that.
I have no problem with the worker not doing time, you get what you pay for and the parents made an extremely poor decision to leave such a young baby with strangers who have other children to look after.
The parents are no doubt devestated, but I doubt even they suspect any kind of malicious intent. Is there a civil suit coming against the day care? That's how this can be settle appropriately imo.

Not even close. Parents unintentionally leave their children in cars. It's an accident. It's got to be a nightmare. Prison doesn't solve much and I really don't think it's the right answer in this case. Not going Darth Vader on my opinion here and defend it for several pages but show me someone who's never made an incredibly stupid mistake and I'll show you a liar.
