If you can keep it untreated, and like a rustic look it's no maintanence. I don't think it needs to be treated to last. I have 1500 sq feet of siding on my contemporary house and I need it pristine, that means I have to clean it 2x a year and stain it every year. I let it go a few years back, and it got black mold all over it. That's not a problem if it's bare. You just bleach it and it's good. Bleach will get rid of my mold but also makes the stain spotty. Even when I restrain it, you can see the splotches. So I have to sand off the stain. That means any sign of mold I clean it, and stain it so it inhibits the mold. It's a huge Pima. Especially 20' in the air, and in the north side.
Bottom line, no stain and bleach as needed.

It takes many years for cypress to become bug proof and rot proof. A lot of the cypress cut today is from trees that werent old enough for this to happen. That is why the old houses are still in great shape and the stuff built with cypress from trees cut today sucks (unless it happens to be from a very old tree, which isnt likely)

Thanks for the responses everyone. It makes me a lot more confident about things... I did notice what ive now learned is carpenter bee damage on one of the trim pieces.

What I learned here is that there's some variation in the quality of what is termed "cypress".
Old cypress is hard as iron and practically indestructible. You can't get that kind of cypress any longer except from sinkers.

Old cypress vs. new cypress. Old cypress is very expensive. And very good.

I have an old house on my land, over 100 years old made entirely of cypress. It's been abandoned for probably 60+ years. Hell, probably more... no plumbing or wiring whatsoever. Damn thing is still in remarkable shape.
I have a shitton of new and reclaimed cypress in my new house, but it's mostly on the ceilings and porch walls, Anything exposed to weather (besides the porch columms) is hardy plank.

Id buy it. Just pray you don't have a fire. I remeber a few years back I worked on a cypress camp that caught in fire in the west side of lake maurepas. This was meth and Klan country for sure. The only piece of wood in the house that didny catch bad was the ceiling panels.
