Earlier this week, at a meeting of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly, the operator of First City Homeless Services, a downtown day shelter in the city, revealed that not all of the people who visit the shelter are homeless, especially during the cruise season between May and September.

“The season opened this week, and one of the hidden items that happens as a result of the proximity of the day shelter to downtown and the cruise ships is we do often get the husband who doesn’t want to go shopping anymore to come to the shelter to sit — seriously — to drink our free our free coffee, use our free bathrooms, and eat our free donuts,” she explained to the Assembly. “So proximity to downtown for the day shelter even benefits the cruise agencies.”

Every trip downtown in the summer reminds me how clueless people can be and how little situational awareness they have. The cruise ships drop off up to 10,000 on some days and you can see some of the most socially awkward people on the planet.

It's coffee and doughnuts, who gives a shite? Yeah it sucks if they're like extremely limited but it's not like this guy was knocking back premium liquor.

When you are in Key West and a boat comes in it is like they bring Walmart to you.*

Ketchikan has a homeless shelter? There's 8000 people there. A 20 piece of Mcnuggets and a couple blankets should do the trick.

Yeah, lots of natives from some of the villages go to Ketchikan often and are temporarily homeless. We have a fairly bad homeless problem too.

Hell, I read an article a couple of years ago about Eagle having some homeless people. Not Eagle River the suburb of Anchorage, but Eagle, way the frick up in the Interior. One guy lived outside all winter.

There are a lot of homeless resources. However, most stipulate that you can't drink which keeps some people from seeking their services.

There's a guy locally who fakes a heart attack 3-4 times a week for a free ride to the ER and a night in the hospital. Everyone knows its BS, but what are you gonna do?

I have no idea why homeless people love the PNW. If I were homeless I'd save up for a bus ticket to anywhere where I wasn't cold and wet. I understand why the recently or temporary stay but longterm, I'm heading for sunshine.

Mild weather and lots of resources for homeless folks. Even this far north, our winters are mild and summers are comfortable.

I've heard of homeless up that way. It's cold, dry cold but little or no wind. I guess in Eagle there would also be an abundance of small game too.

Yeah, I suppose, as long as you can stay dry. That seems to be less of a problem every year now. Western WA is starting to feel more like northern Cali.

They just built more housing here for the chronically homeless. It's based on a program Anchorage and Seattle have where residents can have a place, drink or whatever they want. The problem is, if you build it they will come. More than you can accomodate.
