Crime around LSU

I don't know that anything can be done about Baton Rouge crime in general, but what can LSU do to decrease crime around campus?
I have thought for years that the state or the school should buy up as much real estate around the campus to create a buffer zone.
I'm generally against state involvement in this type of thing, but LSU has a real vested interest in cleaning this up.
This is not about football recruiting, but there are threads on this topic on the recruiting board about other schools using this against LSU, so this touches many aspects of the campus and college life.
I know out-of-state parents that don't know campus or BR well that are very concerned.
Thoughts?

Fine, but let's make that hood a couple miles from LSU.

LSU doesn't have the money, and if they did, it would just move the problem a few blocks. You still have an open campus with thousands of twentysomethings, many of whom don't have much situational awareness. And criminals who see the easy pickings.
Stop and frisk would work. If you don't have a legitimate reason to be on campus, you're not allowed to be there. But it would be politically unfeasible, and frankly, I wouldn't want to live in that kind of society.
The long term answer is gentrification, which is happening.

Raise property taxes on the north side of campus by the president and state streets.
Boom. Problem solved.

Is LSU the only college that has bad areas around it? Have crimes been out of hand around campus? Do you have data that shows crime on campus is getting worse?

I don't think the problem is so much actually ON campus, but around campus where people are living, traveling etc.
Gentrification is the answer, but perhaps some government intervention to speed up the process.
LSU is such a huge economical driver, I just don't think the admin has flexed their muscle and demanded the city solve this issue.
There is no reason you should be able to even see some of the trash you can see from LSU's campus. (alaska street area)

This sounds like a problem you have with a certain group of people, not necessarily the crime. Most people from the Alaska St. area don't venture south of North Gate unless they work at LSU.
Did you get ripped off trying to buy drugs in the hood or something?

No, but I'm not a graduate of any other college or have kids at any other college, so IDGAF.

This isn't something new. LSU has bordered a bad area for a long time. We said 30 years ago "don't get caught after dark on a street named after a state."
There have been many break-ins and problems at some of the new apartment complexes, like the Standard that are in that area.
The debate is not whether there is a problem, but what can LSU do about it. The answer could very well be nothing.

I know one thing that would help solve the problem.. If a few of these fricks who break into the apartments get shot and word starts getting around that breaking in is more risky than in the past.

It'll never happen, but they should buy and demolish all of the trap houses around campus and build a wall.

I totally agree. If open carry on campus was a thing then I think there would be less problems. All it takes are two or 3 TPOS getting shot while trying to rob someone.

I attended LSU in the 80's and it was horrible back then. I can't imagine what it must be like now.
You're correct that there should be redevelopment of surrounding areas. It should be a partnership between private and public resources. Tax incentives could be used.
Given the politics of Baton Rouge and Louisiana, it will never happen. Just like the loop around the city.

When those things start to happen more and more you can't wait around for other people to decide its time to do something to help fix the problem and if nothing is done about it, it will only get worse so the way you stop it is to make it more risky for them to do it..
