New Mexico- That heat claimed the lives of a French couple hiking the undulating dunes of the Alkali Flat Trail with their 9-year-old son. The mother and father were both overcome by the temperature and died of heat-related illness, collapsing at different points along the trail, the local sheriff said.

August.
Desert.
Hiking.

From the NPS website:

quote:

There is no shade or water along the trail, and summer temperatures can exceed 100 degrees F (38 ° C). Heat-related illness is common in warm weather and can be fatal. Hike during cool times. Carry food and at least two quarts of water. Rest, eat and drink when tired. Drinking water is available only at the Visitor Center. The white sand reflects sunlight. Protect all exposed skin from sunburn. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses. We recommend that you do not hike alone.

Picture of a trail marker on the trail....

This was 100% preventable.

This kid has officially lived the childhood that Jim Morrison pretended to have lived.

Same way you get halfway through Russia and realize it's cold as shite. It's the kind of thing that they do.

What kind of fricked up vacation is that?

"Hey Pierre, how about we walk across a desert this summer with no water to relax and have fun?"

Yes he lived. Father kept saying the car is just over there. He was disoriented.

It's happens. An LSU graduate, and classmate of mine was doing field work for his thesis in Big Bend just a couple years ago and died 1/4 mile from his vehicle.

This past May I ran out of water in the field for the first time in my life while I was up in Wyoming. Talk about a scary experience.

How does anybody get in that kind of trouble walking less than five miles?

Apparently the parents gave water to the kid.

I've done plenty of desert hiking and have turned back a startling number of foreign tourists who have no idea what they're getting into. Favorite case was when I was coming up out of the Grand Cayon South Rim at the end of a rim-to-rim hike and saw two dot Indian women in full ankle-length sarongs and sandals just starting down. Between them they had a single 20 oz. bottle of water. They were trying to hike to Indian Gardens and back.

I thought Jim claimed that his folks died in a car accident.

Looking at that trail photo, I'm surprised the kid didn't die of boredom.

Reminds me of people trying to hike 8-10 mile trails in the Smokies in jeans and tennis shoes or flip flops who start their hikes at around 1 in the afternoon. These are the same people who try to get selfies with black bears.

The reason there are signs warning people not to hike in high heel shoes is because if there aren't, they will.
