County sent me annual car taxes for a car that I traded in. What should I do?

I traded it in and transferred the tags about 6 weeks ago. I guess the county's system just hasn't caught up yet.

Should I play dumb and just pay them? Or, should I be honest, call the county, and have the taxes adjusted up to reflect the new vehicle?

What would the OT posters who live in areas with vehicle property taxes do?

Wtf is a vehicle property tax. That's blatant stealing. So you pay taxes when you buy the vehicle, then you pay more taxes yearly on it? frick that

You simply let them know it was sold and any evidence to support it. I assume you turned in your license plate?

Not all that uncommon. Mississippi has it. If you move to a state with movable property tax on cars(Texas has it on boats and RVs), it can be a WTF feeling.

Nope, it was a trade so I transferred the tag. I guess the County's system hasn't updated yet to reflect the trade. The DMV knows because I have the new registration from the portion of this previous tax year for the new car.

We're talking about the value of the vehicle going up about 2.5x between the old and new vehicle, so I should really be paying a much higher bill.

Tell them FU and to come and get it.

After wondering where you car is they'll place the lien on a car you don't own.

Annual car tax? Damn, that sounds very Mississippian or Massachusettsian.

Yep. It comes out to about 2.5% of the Fair Market Value of the vehicle where I live.

The best/saddest part is....the vast majority goes to the same type things that my home property taxes goes towards, schools. You'd think it would support road maintenance...nope.

The gift that keeps giving- I bet sales tax is what 8%?

Then they get a cut of 2.5% for the life of the vehicle. I love the rent you pay to some municipalities on the stuff you "own" so they can function.

That is about right. I live on a county line, so it differs a little depending on where I shop.

SC is still one of the lowest tax-burden states in the country.

If SC is like AR, then you pay last year's (2015) property tax this year (2016).

So next year you won't pay for taxes on your traded in car.

That is what I figured.

Either way, I'm probably not going to say anything about it. I will just pay the bill that I have. If there is an issue, I'll take care of it at that time. If I get my new tag from the DMV, then I know I'm ok.

I forgot how foreign annual vehicle taxes are to some people. Lucky them haha

Not very uncommon at all. In my state, it pretty much evens out since the sales taxes when you buy a car are not that much. I just bought a new car, in LA it would have been about 2500 sales tax, but here it was only 300, but I paid about 300 in property tax. That'll decrease each year. In the end both ways work out pretty even, just one way you pay up front and the other you pay over time.

You should've sent them a copy. Pay it the county probably needs your money for road and bridge repairs and child safety programs.

And please stop telling people here yall have vehicle property tax, the head mongoloid in BR is always looking for something new to tax.

WE have annual vehicle taxes already - i.e. inspection stickers and registration.

I should've sent them a copy of what? It isn't my responsibility to let the county know if I traded in my vehicle. That is between the dealership that handled the trade, the DMV, and the county.

And of course I'm going to pay my taxes.

You pay it in Louisiana in the form of a Vehicle Registration Fee every 2 years,

I do have several large vehicles that have permanent tags that I paid lump sum for upfront.
