Saw an article saying Houston cost of living jumped the last few years and that homes are becoming unobtainable. Houston baws, is this true? Looking for baws who don’t own a home yet

Cost of living is still relatively cheap and was one of the reasons I chose Houston over Charlotte, Atlanta, Birmingham and Clearwater when I relocated.

It’s by far the cheapest for a city its size, owing mostly to the fact that geography lets it sprawl out for what seems like infinity. But you’re not going to move from a small town to any thriving American city and see your CoL go down.

I agree that housing prices are getting too high here in Houston. I have held that opinion since I moved here in late summer 2012.

That being said, I bought my house in December 2018 and got it for $5K less than the sellers paid for it 4 years ago. There are still deals to be had if you can find them.

There are tons of houses on the market and it seems like more every day in my area, Greater Heights.

Cost of living in river oaks is high. Cost of living in south Houston is low. There is plenty of in between. As with anywhere else you must make a decision of what you value. You aren’t going to find a cheap 4 bedroom two story house with a pool a yard in a great school district next to the museums but you can find that in a suburb and have a commute.

It's true if it continues at this pitch. Property taxes are high AF and not sustainable in the long term IMO. We're slowly becoming California where new home builds *in nice areas* won't be affordable to first time home buyers unless they're making a gazillion dollars.

Not to mention loan restrictions. I live on a street with about 75 homes. There are 8 brand new builds ongoing right now on my street alone - all 1.2M+ each

That is true. Property taxes and appraisal values are out of control. The appraisal district fricked me pretty hard and I am protesting. The value of my house has been flat for the past 5 years so they are trying to screw me as the new owner.

This is my situation. I make low six figures and I have more than enough money.

Too many folks on here lack perspective in regards to income and money. The average household income in the US is roughly $60K.

People have trouble distinguishing needs and wants. If you cannot live on $100K a year then you are doing it very wrong.

If you’ve acquired debt as your income has increased then you’ll still feel poor.

I am not sure why the value has been flat for 5 years. My house did not flood. A couple of my buddies that live in Garden Oaks and Rice Military had their appraised values go down.

HCAD is definitely trying to frick people now post Harvey though.

Are you referring to the previous 5 years before you bought the house? Because AfTER you bought the house they have an actual number to base the taxes. Unless they are valuing house for more than you paid.

Cost of living near the center of the city is certainly rising. Since Houston has no real geographical obstacles new development would always expand further and further out. But of course these new developments are causing other places to flood due to drainage and more concrete. Also the commutes just get longer and longer as people push further out.

Still a very affordable large city. You can find plenty of places for under $300k inside of 610. For that price in the burbs, you have your choice of burbs but you'll be an hour away from downtown most commutes.
