One of my cousins on my maternal grandfather's side did an incredible family tree thing that went all the way back to the 1600's when my ancestors arrived from England

My PawPaw was a farmer. His Dad was a farmer. His Dad's Dad was a farmer. Long lines of farmers.

I'd like to know too. I've never done it bc my papa on my mom's side had so much good stuff but I'd like to do it for my Dad's side. Furthest I can go back on his side is Poland in the 30's.

I have a great great uncle who was a cavalry officer in the Confederate Army. He was with Lee's army that surrendered at Appomatox.
He had to walk all the way home to Louisiana afterward.
I also had two uncles who fought at the Battle of the Bulge.
My mom's side of the family is full of military guys. My dad's side of the family is full of artists, priests and musicians. lol

My 4th great Grandfather...
James Pitot (1761–1831) was the second Mayor of New Orleans.
Jacques Pitot is not properly remembered for his role as President of the Orleans County Police Jury (akin to a "county commission" elsewhere) when, January 31, 1814, he authorized the re-enlisting of free people of color into the local militia. Pitot's volunteer militia, including the free men of color, joined other units of free people of color, as well as numerous slaves, who all were central to the defense of New Orleans under the unified command of General Andrew Jackson.

Jimmie Davis was my "step-grandfather" (he was my grandmother's second husband and she was his second wife).
I spent almost every Thanksgiving, Christmas, and most July 4th-holidays from 1975 through the late 1990s at the home he and my grandmother shared, adjacent to the rear of the Governor's Mansion property across the lake from the State Capital. He would recite the same poetic prayer before each Holiday meal...and us grandkids would try to recite it with him, which he seemed to enjoy.
Even after he was well into his 90s, Jimmie retained his larger-than-life persona; he was truly a great story-teller who would regale us with tales of the people he met and the places he went during his two terms as governor. I was always in awe of him.

My family owned the land that is now Fontainebleau state park. My only perk is I don't have to pay the $2 to get into the park. I do have books from the 1800s from them though.
