I have a 50'x100' Quonset Hut style barn. I'd like to build a 14'(wide)x10'(tall)x100'(long) "room" on one side of it. What spec lumber should I use if I space everything at 2'? I'd like to be able to use the area above the room for storage. 2x6 or 2x4 studs? What size joists for a 14' span? TIA.

Barn is similar to this:

I wouldn't go any less than a 2x6 for wood joists.

14 feet is a long span for storage (which I would need more info on) AND you're only going to space every 2 feet.

I'd use minimum 2x12 if it was my barn and I wanted to use dimensional lumber.

2x4 walls are fine as long as the studs are located under your joists.

Edit: I'd space at 16oc if it was my barn. It will bounce otherwise.

The room would be a workshop

The quonset hut is set up with 2' sections, idea was to match those sections.

Would you consider something engineered?

There is a complete concrete slab under the barn. You're saying the "2nd story" plywood floor would bounce on 2' centers?

Thanks!

2x8 16" o.c. will give you a 30lb/sq ft liveoaf at 14' span

2x4 walls are fine. Double up the top plate.

I would go 2x10 2' o.c. and cross brace down the middle.

2 feet centers are not normal in construction, and frankly are a cost- cutting measure.

For a shop you'd want a sturdy floor. I'd move to 16oc and 2x12 joist with a beam mid-way (unless you wanted to counter-lever with a beam at 2/3rds your span). That would be at 9 feet in your case.

This is underbuilt in my honest opinion.

If PeeJ can't figure it out, no one can.

Makes sense. It's just a matter if/how I'm going to match the "ceiling" of the room to the pattern of the hut walls for insulation, 2' centers would make that easier. But could be done either way.

Just out of curiosity, say I wanted to make a 10'high, by 24' wide open space room. What kind of joist construction does that require? Interesting stuff for sure.

Just to be clear, the shop will be on the concrete slab at the bottom of the hut, the joist will just support the ceiling and storage above that area.

Question to make sure im getting this right. You plan to frame a wall against the inside wall of your shop. Set another wall 14' away from that and then use that as a shop. Framed on existing concrete slab. So you would use the roof of your shop as storage?

In this case you're definitely talking about engineered joists. No question that will be the best way.

14 feet you can do with dimensional lumber if framed right (over a beam of dimensional lumber).

If you're talking 30 plus feet span you're looking at engineering joists.

All this sounds rather iffy, do you have any experiencing in laying wood?

Sorry. My mistake. In that case I'd go 2x10 but still on 16 centers if you are adding weight in storage area. Could get by with less if storage was very light.

HSS6x6x1/2 columns with W18x35 beams. Weld all around with 5/16" fillet.
