It's really easy to get free badges if you are willing to go at like noon. We took the trolley downtown for lunch and when we were getting off we asked people that were leaving for their badges. There were three of us, we asked 2 groups of people, and the first group gave us 2 and the next gave us 3. We sold the extra 2 as we were walking in for $25 each so not only did we get free badges we also made $50.

If you do go stay at a hotel not in downtown but on the train or trolley line. You'll still get there in less than 20-30 minutes but your hotel will be WAY cheaper, they jack up prices that weekend from what I have read. You could have a nice 3 day weekend at comic-con for about $1000, including your flight, if you don't stay downtown, get free badges and book your flight and hotel 2-3 months in advance!
