This is so sad. May he RIP.

Completely preventable

quote:

The parents of Grant Brace, a University of the Cumberlands wrestler, say their son died from an "exertional heat stroke" after struggling to find water. When he became exhausted and begged for a water break during training, one of his coaches allegedly told him to keep going or he'd be kicked off the team. Brace’s grieving parents say he desperately tried to find water but he collapsed and later died. The parents sued the university and two of Brace’s coaches for wrongful death. Without admitting any wrongdoing, the university and the two coaches settled the lawsuit with his parents, with the school agreeing to pay $14 million. The university says it will work with an expert to help raise awareness about heat-related injuries. Grant's coaches did not respond to Inside Edition's requests for comment.

Very sad. Cutting weight, being tough, not stopping are all part of being a great wrestler. Coach is at fault. Has to know when to say enough

Water denial by coaches in sports is top level stupidity.

Googled the college thinking it was the old Cumberland College that played football against LSU back in the late 1800’s. It’s a different college.

University of the Cumberlands has 3000 undergrads and 13000 grad students. Sounds like an online haven for graduate degrees. Usually the split would be the opposite in a normal college

The problem is the old myth of making one tough. Improper hydration even if it doesn't kill you prevents an athlete from training at 100% which prevents them from being the bet they can be when it is time to perform. If they need mental toughness training just push them harder when they are properly hydrated. You generally won't find elite or professional athletes training purposely with inadequate hydration, it is beyond stupid and we know better now.

It’s wrestling. Cutting weight. This isn’t the hardass football coach from the 60’s withholding water breaks to toughen them up. Let’s not act like cutting weight with dehydration doesn’t happen in wrestling/MMA/Boxing.

Look, we didn't do anything wrong, but here's $14 million bucks.

Mental toughness is way off here.

Dehydration is part of the game to cut weight to wrestle in a lower weight class. This is a fighting-sport issue more than it is a coach preaching mental toughness. The sport needs to better regulate this.

Because he could’ve just quit to go find water. The coaches didn’t physically stop him.

Yes, that is 100% accurate, but maybe seven years ago, in Jackson, MS, a Jackson Prep football player collapsed during a game and died from drinking too much water.
A massive intake of water diluted
the sodium in his blood to the point where his heart couldn’t beat properly. I believe it’s the same result as not drinking enough water; either way the heart doesn’t get what it needs to keep the signals firing which keep the heart beating. It wasn’t any one’s fault, no one sued, it was a heartbreaking tragedy. It was either the first or second game of the season, August, hot and humid as hell in MS and all the boys had been hydrating all afternoon and one really great kid just drank too much water.

He really was a great kid with a bright future.
