College Kid Trying To Work on His Truck (OT Mechanics) Update Page 3

Okay guys, my truck won't start. When I turn the key, I hear a click and that's it.
I've replaced the battery since the guy at autozone told me it was bad. It still does the same thing.
Do you all think it's the starter/solenoid?
Could the alternator prevent it from starting?
Could it be anything else?

make sure that the new battery is in fact good. if it is.......you can change your starter.

Not the alternator, since you have a new battery.
Can you turn your lights on and listen to the radio?
If so, probably need a new starter, solenoid, or potentially a blown fuse.
If not- check the battery cable posts for corrosion. If dirty, you can clean them off with a wire brush and some acidic cleaner.
If that still doesn't help, there is a good chance your new battery sucks.

Do what other millennials do in this situation. Call your Dad and demand he pay to fix it NOW. And make some comment with the term " soulless paternalistic capitalist hierarchy" before you hang up.
Your welcome.
Your welcome.

Yeah, sounds like it's either your starter or a fuse. The clicking sound you hear is the solenoid actuating, so it shouldn't be that.

Have someone turn the key and tap the starter with a wrench

Do you have a multimeter or a jumper box or something that will show you the battery voltage? Assuming the voltage is good and assuming your cables are clean etc. and the lights are on but you're just getting a click then it's probably the starter.

Do you have any idea which fuses it could be?

No multimeter or anything like that.
Went to get one and they're pretty damn expensive. College budget.

A truck that won't start is not rad, bro

No, but you should be able to find the fuse box diagram online for your truck.

Jumped the gun and took the starter out already.
I'm going to bring it to Autozone to get it tested. Hoping that's what's wrong.

check your ground(negative or-) cable to your battery first(use some wd40 and a wire brush to clean it),if that is fine, then you might want to check your solenoid. On your truck,it is mounted on the starter.Disconnect your cables at the battery before messing with the starter,or any other electrical stuff.

Sounds like the starter to this OT mechanic.

This. Starter motor is old and the rotor is stuck. This might get it going but you will likely keep having the same problem down the road until you replace it.
