No, a suit is the classic definition of "cocktail.
Correct. Which is why I said "in modern times."

However, I would likely wear a suit since it is a wedding. I saw cocktail at first but didnt realize it was for a wedding

Cocktail dress is a suit. End of story.

Put cocktail dress on after hour work social, or another similiar type of event in the major cities.

Watch the majority of people stroll in like this

I will head to Brooks Brothers to check them out. Anyone ever order a suit off of Amazon? There are some deals.

Back two generations guys wore three piece suits unless they wore tux.

I think the age of the participant may allow for sports coat. I would ask hostess how her people are dressing since you are popping for a new outfit. Get it right.

I am simply saying cocktail attire in modern times has morphed from what used to be a suit.

I've never been involved in a cocktail attire event where suits weren't the norm

Dillards, but the Mall of Louisiana store, not the Cortana one.
I'd wear a suit to a wedding, better to be slightly overdressed.
By the way, I attended a pretty damned nice party two weekends ago, and opted out of seersucker, because it was at night. It was hot as hell that evening, and dontcha know five or six old bastards wore seersucker that night. I coulda kicked myself for not wearing mine. I'd have been much more comfortable.
