This. I'm not sure what they do if you have something major, but technically you can get cobra retroactively ( as in after you have an issue).

But, wtf op thanks to Obama you can get cheap insurance anytime. There should not be a waiting period and there is no need to get a health check up. Go sign up for the crappiest plan online for like $100/ month. That's all you need and will help in case of something really bad.

You might take a hit on your 2017 taxes for not having insurance for the entire year. Pretty sure that's part of the affordable health care act. People that don't have insurance pay more in taxes.

It's worth looking in you. I made a mistake on my 2016 taxes and the box stating that I had insurance for the entire year got unchecked somehow. It made about a 2k difference in my tax bill. I went from getting back around $500 to owing $1500.

You can elect for cobra retroactively. It stops after 60 days from you old job ending. So just take the cobra and don't pay the premium unless you get hurt.

Question is, how big of a gambler are you?

Someone else knows my pain.

In 2016 I had a surprise gallstone that blocked my common bile duct, gave me pancreatitis, required hospitalization (NPO to reduce pancreas inflammation), and I had my gallbladder removed. I was 31, thankfully no cancer, though. $21,000 for the hospital room, $2900 for the gallbladder surgery. BCBS paid for all of the surgery, my co-pay for the room was only $70/day--they willingly paid $7000/day without a fuss.

Thank goodness for insurance, even if you feel healthy.

You sure? That link talks about a short gap exemption, but that doesn't exclude anything over two months.

quote:

If your gap was 3 months or more, you can’t claim this exemption for any of those months.Example: You didn’t have coverage any day in April, May, or June. You can’t claim this exemption for any of those months.

You will pay through your a-hole sideways for it. If you are healthy and don't have a long wait period, roll the dice.

You don't need insurance. It's just a bet you'll get sick. Stay healthy and don't worry about it.

According to the Cobra stuff I have 90 days of Grace since I'm switching employers, so the time in between is technically irrelevant but still

If something catastrophic were to happen then you could just pick up COBRA and pay the back months and you would still have coverage.

If your new coverage starts Sept 1st, you have less than 3 weeks before it kicks in.

Here is the COBRA law:

You have 60 days to elect.

Then, if you elect, you have 45 days to pay. That's 105 days.

I have done this twice and never paid a dime since I did not need to see a doctor.
