Same group of people that would be outraged if people from northern states were making ignorant Katrina statements.

It is a big story, and it certainly impacts more people. But typically, it doesn't devastate as many people, and that's where I think the riff is. Nonetheless, I don't find fault with the coverage, I just roll my eyes at the sensationalism.
