Climate Change, not Mismanagement, Responsible for Wildfires

quote:

Climate change impacts, such as earlier snowmelt, longer fire seasons, and hotter, drier conditions, have led to an increase in wildfire activity.

Let's just forget about the fact that, unlike the Southeast which has embraced fire as a management tool, California has perpetually pushed false management practices of supressing fire in fire-prone systems.

NWF pushing the climate change agenda.

So, climate change causes record rainfalls and record fires. If we combine the two, is everything just normal?

Is that a major cause of wildfires?

That also contributes to the BS that is NWF's argument. Unless climate change also leads to increases in arsonists, this is further proof of how idiotic this argument is.

Arson is another issue that could be reduced through proper fire management, at least in terms of severity.

Environmentalists never admit wrongdoing so of course they would blame it on CC and not proven and disastrous mismanagement of forests. Their zero logging/thinning policies have been proven to be bad for man and nature.

Actually, the funny thing is, some environmentalist organizations like the Sierra Club actually do promote prescribed fire. Wonder how much they actually push for proper forest management in California. If they do, they must not have much influence, which is odd for a state like California.

As I understand it, select logging is just as important as prescribed burns

Eh, I don't know about that. The herbaceous and shrub undergrowth are far more significant in terms of fuel load. Trees aren't typically a major factor in fire management, other than to supress fire. For example, your fire danger is much higher in a pine savannah ecosystem than a mixed hardwood forest because of greater understory composition.

In fact, selective logging without proper understory management could INCREASE the fuel load by allowing more sunlight to the understory and less competition for resources.

Some of the timber companies in Louisiana have actually begun allowing LDWF to burn on the properties they lease out for WMAs. I'm not sure of the exact reasoning, but I would suspect that the reduced work at harvest and fire suppression have something to do with it.

Now, I could see the removal of snags (standing dead trees) or logs being a fire suppression measure. But you don't have to removal all of those. Wildlife managers will typically recommend 1 or 2 snags per acre. Timber managers probsbly don't like them at all. Then again, a lot of timber managers don't like fire.

True dat...If you dont burn today you will burn up tomorrow... everyone knows this but wacklibs in CA...NWF believes in CC because it a vehicle to raise money. PLus all those groups live in an alternate reality/through the looking glass gibberish is science...

Eh, I don't know thst I'd say everyone knows burning is good. Most wildlife and forest agencies were still against it half way through the 20th century. The southeast, with its ever-growing acreage of longleaf pine, is really the first region of the country to actively embrace fire as a management tool. Most timber managers still don't like it, but that attitude seems to be changing with more and more education on the benefits of prescribed fire.

Absolutely. But arson is very difficult to prove.

The issues are not mutually exclusive.

Smokey the Bear did his job too well over the years. Blame him.

Wildfires are natural events that have shaped the landscape The true disturbance is the putting out if wildfires. They are natural events. You allow the fuels to build up and when a wildfire does come its disastrous. The message here is wrong.

lightning is God's controlled burn. If you dont thin undergrowth you for sure will have the nuttiness of CA wildfires.
