firing up my grill tonight for first time since the flood. is it enough to use grill cleaner, fire it up real hot then scrap the grill or am i setting myself up for a good ol' fashioned er visit?

Why would lighting a grill send anyone to the ER?

You might be ok, but sitting in flood waters with oil, and gas, from the streets and everywhere, grill got no telling what allover it. I'd get a new one and throw that one away.

That should be fine. Just scrub it clean when hot then rub a rag of oil across it.

sorry no pics. it's a akorn which is a green egg knockoff. i cleaned off the grill from all the grime with some webber grill cleaner and then i lit it up and closed it. temp held around 500 for about 30 minutes. it smelled like i had a trash fire. after that, opened it back up and brushed off the grill again. soot was on the grill but once i brushed it off again, the smell went away and it just smells like a grill.
about to throw some steaks on and hope for the best.

And all the oh so lovely raw sewage.
Would you eat off something that may have at once soaked in raw sewage?

I'd let it burn for at least an hour or more. Maybe get a bunch of pork fat and reseason it.

Sounds like you need to buy a Primo.

good idea. it's been sitting at 400 for the past hour, so that part is done. it has stopped smoking completely.

Ceramic is very pourous. This is why you are supposed to use lump charcoal and are discouraged to use it if it's been soaking in raw sewage and gasoline.

threw the charcoal out that was in it and bought new bag of lump charcoal. i got at least that part right.

The Akorn grill gets to this price point first by swapping the traditional high-temperature ceramic for an insulated metal shell.

The Akorn is not ceramic- it is steel, so that concern won't apply in this case. I think you should be good. I would guess that you'll be looking to replace it in a year or so, though, since I'm sure water got in between the layers of steel.

You'll be fine if it's an egg knock off and ran it at high temps first
