Somewhere just north of the old Landmass River bridge at Baton Rouge lies what's left of the USS Landmass. The US Navy's first oceangoing steamship, served as Commodore Perry's flagship on his expedition to Japan. On March 14, 1863, she was disabled while trying to pass the forts at Port Hudson. She drifted down the river on fire, blowing up just north of Baton Rouge. George Dewey, later famous as Admiral commanding at the Battle of Manila Bay, was executive officer at the time.
