This settlement would not have occurred without authorization from the insurance companies and their lawyers. Because the insurance company has a duty to defend the city in civil suits, they likely determined that settling would be less expensive than litigating and losing at trial.

Jesus Christ, the responses in this thread are the least subtle subtle-racism I've seen on the OT. Expected on the PoliBoard, but damn...

It's so disheartening. A man lost his life. A baby lost her father. And his girlfriend lost her boyfriend and can't broadcast to Facebook live anymore.

The dumbass shouldn't have gone for ANYTHING IN HIS CAR as the cop repeadedly tells him to stop with gun drawn.

Nobody knows exactly what happened in the car because there is only a dashcam video. There is testimonial evidence, which aren't exactly facts.

Thats what we do for our clients that cant handle money, take half in cash (so they can pay their contingency fee) and put a mil in their pocket and put the childs money in trust.

I'll net 2 mil easy in 18. Lawyer buddy died of colon cancer and we took in 125 files in May on top of what we had. Crazy busy.

Completely ridiculous settlement amount

Why?

I know someone who got 16 million for being injured.

A man loses his life over a busted or burnt out tail light, a little girl and her mother will always carry around with them the memory of a man being killed in front of them and 2.9 mil is all the family got for all the trauma? Should've been more!

Whew lawds gone be some bans in this one. I'm not convinced this one wasn't murder...3 mil is a small price to pay for a capital crime at the hands of an employee. Why are cops so trigger happy!? Pew pew pew pew pew

Well..

I was pulled over in a truck I used to have as a toy. Blacked out windows. Lowered 2/4. Loud arse exhaust. Hopped up 350. At around midnight on a Friday coming home from work.

I have a concealed carry and had it holstered near where my wallet is at.

Cop approached vehicle. I left my hands on the wheel and informed him I was carrying and it was by my wallet. I followed his instructions. He issued me a warning and I left.

I'm still here typing this. It did nothing wrong and I'm sure I was pulled over due to the truck and time of night. I was dirty os frick from work and looked like shite. One might would go so far as to describe me as undesirable. In my appearance.

Stil here though.

Amazing how that works out I guess I was just lucky...

Does anybody else think that on some level these folks have a thought of martyrdom and $ for their family in the back of their minds when they make their decisions on how to deal with the police?
I had a minority patient last year tell me he disobeyed the police on purpose when he got pulled over (he was aggressive and jumped out of car - wound up just getting tazed/arrested) because he wanted a payout for his family or himself if he survived.

In other news, the city of St. Anthony, Minnesota just saw a huge boost in the local economy.

That money will be gone in about a month
