re: City of New Orleans again pushes back deadline for bids on Confederate monument

the bidders will be revealed at the bid opening
there won't be a bid opening because there won't be any bidders based on this bid set. If the city wants them gone they will hire an engineer to design the lifts. Until they do the statues will stay where they are

I refuse to visit the city until the statues come down and all the confederate jasmine is removed.

Seems like you know a little bit about it. What would an insurance company's perspective be on something like this?
Posted on 4/22/16 at 8:27 am to Hammertime
It depends
the city owns the monuments (I assume)
the engineer carries errors and omissions for his design
the crane company carries GL
so it would depend on what or who caused the damage
If it were me taking them down I would insist on being held harmless for any damage as long as I followed the lift design

Just wait, some DBE business will step in and be more than happy to rip them down

Two of the contractors seemed as worried about the safety of the statues as they were about their own security, since the winning bidder will bear the liability for any damage to the monuments. One asked whether the city had schematic drawings showing how the statues are attached to their bases. Without them, it would be hard, if not impossible, to remove the statues in such a way as to be absolutely sure they would not break, he said, adding that the risk of damage was particularly high with regard to the Beauregard monument. "It was constructed to be placed, not to be removed," he said. "You guys are going to have some damage." Smith said that the city would disseminate whatever information it had regarding the statues, but that, at least in the case of the Lee monument, there aren't any known plans detailing how it is anchored to column. In the end, Smith said, it is up to the contractor to remove the monuments safely, transport them to their eventual storage facility in the city, unload them, and put them into the warehouse. The city has not yet revealed the exact location of the warehouse. "We expect the statues to be removed and delivered in the state that they are in," he said.

I'm a contractor and you can put a price on the engineering to perform.
You can't put a price on crazy and dangerous people who have no respect for life.
No thanks.

I just don't get it. Leave these statues alone and put up any statue you want that represents your interests.
By removing the confederate statues they are setting the precedent to have any statue they may put up removed one day.

Nah. The Nagin statue will never be taken down.

NOLA native. I have totally switched sides on this issue. Want to see the statues come down just to piss off all the rednecks from around the state.
Posted on 4/22/16 at 9:56 am to WPBTiger
I'll go put in a bid to remove the statues. They aren't going to like the number.

When your 2 million dollar crane goes up in flames due to Molotov cocktails, let me know how that works out.

Brilliant thought - bid it out at some lowball number then just go on GoFundMe or kickstarter or one of those bullshite websites and put out a "call for action" to have volunteers from around the country down to NO to "fight systemic oppression" by taking down the statutes. Of course volunteers must provide their own transportation, tools, lodging, etc., but we'll make a couple gallons of Gatorade and print some shirts to hand out. I guarantee you'll get hundreds of Oberlin grads coming down to chip away at the damn things for you.

I wouldn't touch them out of principle, but that is most definitely a good reason not to even waste time bidding
Do yall honestly think the $200k donation is gonna cover costs for removing these things? No way. It'll end up costing several million dollars, and when nobody forks over the rest of the cash, it'll come out of the city's budget....just like mitch explicitly said it would not
quote:I'd support that idea. The problem is that the city has no money since it's been run by Democrats for so long.

There's a school of thought that Mitch really doesn't care if the statues ever come down (thats why the bid specs are geared toward making it impossible for any contractor to put a real # on the table). He's playing to his base, and if he ultimately has to admit defeat on the issue, he has strawmen he can point the finger at as to why.
Posted on 4/22/16 at 12:29 pm to pmacneworleans
He's vying for an appointed national position. That's the reason for the "gun control measures" he had to have a press conference about yesterday
