Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome should proceed and move forward with plans to seek her replacement for Baton Rouge chief of police. So much attention is given to opinions as to whether Chief Carl Dabadie has performed well. In my humble opinion, I believe the chief has done as good a job as expected, based on Civil Service constraints, previous administration, and union interference. Nevertheless, there is a new mayor in town. That alone is enough reason for the chief to retire honorably.
I recall Chief Dewayne White experienced the same positive relationship with the Metro Council as Chief Dabadie does. The media polled the council members regarding Chief White's performance when he came under fire with Mayor-President Kip Holden; we found White’s performance as favorable.
At the time, Holden reached out to me and other council members seeking support for his decision to relieve Chief White of his duties. I let him know that I felt that it was his decision to replace Chief White; it was indeed his prerogative. If you look back at White’s Civil Service hearing, I was not present.
Chief Dabadie has stated prior to the mayoral race that he would “be willing to remain as chief under the next mayor.” However, he also stated that he “did not want to be where he was not wanted.”
I, for one, am holding the chief to that commitment. Nothing in my prior dealings with Dabadie would lead me to think that he would hold the position "hostage," when Mayor Broome has made it clear throughout her campaign and since being elected her intentions to replace Dabadie. She stated this decision unwaveringly and was elected with this being a highlight of her campaign.
That says something to me!
I would be very disappointed if Chief Dabadie uses the same Civil Service rules that prevented him from getting rid of "bad apples" within BRPD to interfere with the mayor's ability to create a collaborative vision for public safety with a chief of her choosing. Common in both private and public sectors, new leadership handpicks their team. It is not to be viewed as punitive (right or wrong), but progressive (a different direction).

She's repetitive and redundant.

No way she wrote that. The grammar and spelling are too correct by her standards.

This isn't even a sentence. Don't these people have someone proof read before they submit a document for publication?
Besides that, can we be honest here? They need to come out and admit they want a black police chief. It's not that big of a deal, we had one before and will have one again. It's OK to say it Chauna.

out with the old, in with the black

Her thought process is that the chief of police should be someone she likes over someone who reduces crime? Genius idea

My IQ just went down 20 points trying to read this drivel. Thanks to Chauna I may qualify for a special ed scholarship.
When I grow up I will write a letter to the editor and it will be spelled right and it will make sense- Shirley Q Liquor.

Does Forum 35 and the Chamber still sponsor trips to other cities?
It's time to visit Jackson and Memphis.

The fatal flaw in your logic is that you assume she wants to reduce crime

She doesn't want to reduce crime. She wants to rehabilitate habitual offenders.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Chauna actually wrote the original letter in crayon, she must have gotten someone to punch this up for her

Chief Dabadie should stay right where he is and not let anyone force him out. After yesterday, when Mayor Broome rode with the police for two 10 hours shifts just may have shown her what Dabadie and the BRPD has to go through every day 24/7. my opinion is that Banks and Chambers are getting a little uncomfortable with the police chief search.

Chauna Banks could be the dumbest human being alive. It boggles the mind that people have and continue to vote for this brainless moron. Every time I think she can't get any dumber she surprises me. Consider me surprised.
If she is the best and brightest Baton Rouge has to offer, this city is screwed.

Dumb Chauna and Gravy just want a black police chief. That's all is boils down to. It's pathetic.

This is how all this is about to go down.
Chief won't resign, so the mayor will have to pay him to leave because she can't fire him for doing nothing wrong.
Mayor will bring the request to remove him and pay him the metro council.
The reasonable counsel members will vote against it because there is no reason to remove him and incur a financial burden on the parish.
The others will vote for it because Ideology trumps reason for them.
Those who want him out will then say the counsel is racist and promote that message to their constituents.
