Cell phones on speaker - Why?

I have contemplated at length and can't figure this out so I submit to the OT:
Why do people (particularly in their car) put the cell phone on speaker and then hold it two inches from their face? What practical advantage does this offer over putting it to your ear?
I am a huge fan of hands free in the car via BlueTooth so I can keep both hands on the wheel but holding the phone is holding the phone.

Speaker phones in general suck.

Because they want the other person to hear them when they speak and that is more comfortable than pressing the phone on your ear

I used to just leave the phone in the cup holder upside down when I put it on speaker (have Bluetooth now). This was more due to California hands free law, just got used to it in AZ. I'm not sure why people do the thing you described either haha

Guilty. Sometimes I get tired of holding the phone to my ear. I don't have a hands free device so it's easier to just put it on speaker and use the phone in that manner.

What really befuddles me is when I see someone, alone, in a newer luxury vehicle on their phone while driving.
You know the vehicle is equipped with Bluetooth. My Bluetooth works great in my truck, so I imagine it works even better in a vehicle that cost 2-3 times as much as my truck. Why not use it???

This frickin' shite!
And if you are going to put someone on speaker, have the decency to let them know. I have been a real arse when I realize that someone has me on speaker without letting me know and there are others listening. I've actually hung up on work calls after discovering this. It's fricking rude!

I've had that since 2003ish and only used in the ice storm last march because I legit needed two hands to execute the best drift ever.
I just don't like the sound of it.

Well my truck isn't blue tooth equipped and I seldom need a hands free device. The only time I do what the OP described is when I'm talking to my mother. Bless her heart but she gets to rambling and I get tired of holding the phone. It ain't like in going to hang up on her!

I've often thought people are so stupid they mock what they see on reality tv shows. they always seem to have the phone on speaker so you can hear the conversation.

They believe the brain tumor shite. Now why people in newer cars don't use their built-in BlueTooth is beyond me.

I only put the phone to my ear when I FaceTime.

Some hearing impaired people, who have to rely on hearing aids, cochlear implants or a combination of both, find it much easier to understand what's being said when using a speaker phone.
Other than that, I can't help you.

I'm guessing some folks don't like brain cancer
