I bought a used truck from a big dealer at the end of December with a clean carfax report that they advertised. After numerous issues and the a/c not working correctly, I looked up autocheck and it says it was in a severe accident. I am currently looking up the carfax guarantee but is there any recourse for me or am I just screwed?

A missed accident is not cause for Carfax to buyback, unless they said it had a clean title when it didn't (salvage/rebuilt). Also there would have to be an odometer issue, lemon issue.

ETA: If you bought the vehicle "as-is", then there isn't much you can do.

I dont know what, if any, legal recourse you'd have. But have you contacted the dealership? If its a new car dealership, maybe they'll try to work something out with you to avoid hurting their reputation. If its a dealer that only sells used cars, you're probably SOL

I'm assuming you bought your car in Louisiana?

Do you still have the carfax from the purchase? When did the severe accident happen?

Yeah bought the car from a multi state dealer in Louisiana. The accident was six months before my dealer took it in and the carfax still shows no accident.

Carfax only shows accidents reports by insurance companies. Many fleets, including rental and some leasing companies, self insure and their records are not reflected by companies like Carfax.

Buyer beware.

Car fax would have shown if it was a prior rental or leased vehicle. Look into the Carfax buyback guarantee. If that doesn't work, consult with the dealership.

Was the car sold "As-Is"? Check the Used Car Buyer's Guide for any warranty info.

This is why " The Carfax" isn't "all that" : car repair shops are not required to report to Carfax and a huge number do not. People think Carfax is gospel. It only gives info on repairs done by shops that report to them.
Buyers should consider the Carfax incomplete unless it's proven otherwise.

Exactly. There are a lot of things that can go wrong with a car that are not always repaired "on the books" where a company like CarFax can even find it.

Finding a reputable car dealer is the single biggest way to avoid these issues. Paying a little more for a car that isn't hiding a few surprises will pay off over time.

I did buy from a major reputable dealer but we will see what the senior management has to say. I talked to the sales manager for over an hour today and he wrote everything down. We will see what comes out of it...

I assume you bought your car from a Group 1 store?

No it was Landers in Shreveport but they have more dealers in other areas.

Gotcha. I think Landers and Group 1 are the only larger groups that have multiple dealers in LA.

This is like the main reason I buy new, and drive it for 10-15 years.
