I won't name the brand or the dealership in hopes of preventing snarky comments and thread hijacking.

June 3, my birthday. Car died at all stops. Computer seemed to be shutting down the engine. No engine codes.

Took car to dealership where $2500 worth of parts and labor have been expended. Powertrain Control Module (PCM) replaced, plugs replaced, coils replaced, cam and crank sensors replaced, EGR valve replaced (I did), and instrument cluster module replaced.

Friday of last week, car died at stop. It now happens sporadically. I just picked up the vehicle yesterday after the dealership could not re-create the problem.

Car has 101,000 miles. I still like the car, but can't have it stalling in traffic. Time to sell? Take it to another dealership? Pressure the current dealership? I'm not the suing type and I doubt I have a case to recoup any of the 2500 anyway.

I have researched my specific car forums in hopes of finding a similar problem but no luck so far.

I'd get rid of it personally. I'm not messing with a vehicle that might leave me stranded with no warning. Let it be someone else's problem.

Did you see how much your vehicle was worth when $2500 was quoted to fix it? It sounds like a vehicle that was not worth pumping that much money into it. You could have sold it to a mechanic for $500 or so and then used the money to put a down payment on a new or used ride.

Sounds like they've got an incompetent service department that doesn't know it's arse from a hole in the ground. They have no clue what's going on with your car so they're just throwing parts at it hoping that solves the problem.

I'd tell them they're either going to diagnose and repair the problem and give you a free loaner while they're doing it, and refund you for all the unneeded parts. If they won't do these things they'll be faced with a lawsuit and a report to both the BBB and whatever car manufacurer they are a dealer of.

Take it back to the dealer first and foremost.

Sounds like a loose nut between the steering wheel and the drivers seat.

Sounds like they don't know what they are doing. Why would you change the plugs for a vehicle that just dies?

Oh, they know what they're doing. They just took the OP for a ride. Which is why I'd be up in their arse right now about it not being fixed.

Don't bring it to a dealership. Have you consulted any forums for your car? Find a good independent shop.

Sounds like a Jeep I had. Traded it in on that clunkers deal that they did.

That's what the PCM is. To fix the PCM, you can't drive the vehicle so it sat at the dealership until one was programmed and shipped (from Dallas), then re-installed.

I will answer some of the feedback. Since June 3 I have used different approaches with the dealership mechanics. The whole spectrum. Customer service is horrible these days.

Things like the the plugs were in need of replacement so I allowed it. My Mom-and-Pop shop mechanic replaced some things (throttle body), but struck out. He did not charge me and forwarded me to the dealership. You would think with all the resources available at the dealership, any problem could be fixed.

It has been a living nightmare.

This was the big mistake. You, sir, have been had.

My advice would be to either get rid of the vehicle and replace it, or go to an independent mechanic who will charge less, and whose business relies heavily on repution. That will save you money every time, and the issue will usually be fixed faster and much more competently.
